Morning Glories I Have Known (If Only For A Day)

It’s cold and blustery today and I find myself saying to Mother Nature: “No early frost, please!” I’m not ready to say goodbye to these beauties or to the zinnias that keep blooming.

I’m not ready to haul all the porch plants inside for the night in case there might be a frost.

Nope. It’s only October 1st. There’s a hurricane headed up the coast and we’re due for a lot of rain. But no frost, okay?

Good. I’m glad we’ve got that sorted out.

I’ve just finished reading A Song of Shadows  by John Connolly. I’m reviewing it on Just Let Me Finish This Page today. Here is the link. Connolly is an incredible writer. Over the past year, after having read The Wolf in Winter, I’ve gone back and read all of his books in order. Now, I’ve become yet another Connolly fan who has to wait a year for the next book to come out. Sob. He’s going to be signing this book at The Mysterious Bookshop next week and I’d love to meet him, but I don’t think that little trip is in the cards for me.

Now, I’m reading Mrs. Pargeter’s Principle  by Simon Brett. I’ve read all of the books in his Charles Paris series, but this is my first crack at the Mrs. Pargeter series. As always with Brett, the mystery is very well written and I find myself chuckling throughout the book. He’s very, very witty.

This is currently speeding its way to us via Federal Express. Don is so excited! I have to tell you that I’ve listened to all of the mastered tracks and it’s truly excellent, by far the best recording Don has made. He and Dan sound great together. Rick Gedney, the producer, recorded and mixed it in his studio (all of the tracks were recorded in one day.) Atomic Disc mastered the tracks and put it all together in this package.

It will be available as an MP3 for download or as you see it above, a CD that you can hold in your hands and play on your CD player. I’ll have more information available next week.

We’re very excited. This means a great deal to Don and Dan. And to me. They’re having a CD Release Party at our local venue on October 17th, where Don and Dan will perform, along with several other musician friends.

All of the songs were written by Don.

I’m so proud of that husband of mine.

Happy Thursday.

Morning Ritual Redux

August 4, 2015 at 9:28 am by Claudia

I planted morning glory seeds a few months back. In this neck of the woods, we don’t see any blooms until sometime in August. There are about 6 or 7 leafy stems throughout the chicken wire fence garden. The one stem that seemed to be the most spindly, that probably wouldn’t amount to anything, surprised me this morning.

Behold: the first morning glory of the summer. A thing of beauty. It rained a bit last night, so there’s an added bonus of water droplets. And, as you can see, there are more buds on this stem. Yay!

I love my morning glories.

It’s been fairly quiet around here. I read a lot yesterday. In the days before personal computers, I used to get up every morning, make some coffee, and read. Usually the reading matter was a novel of some sort, sometimes I thumbed through a magazine in the days when magazines were chock-full of information we had yet to be able to see online. Remember those days? Seems like ancient history now.

I’ve started reading with my first cup of coffee. Not blogs, not the latest headlines online, not my email – no, I’m reading a book. I’ve gone back to my life before my laptop. It’s so lovely. Simply lovely.

It’s quiet, the aroma of coffee is in the air, my book is in my hands. In the early morning, my sleepy brain is not distracted by a long list of things that must be done. Scout, who needs a lot of hands-on care, is usually sleeping. My mind is completely receptive to the words on the page; open, ready to soak up all the images and descriptions, ready to enter into the world of the imagination.

It’s so simple. I did it for years. But when I started blogging, I developed the habit of cracking open the laptop first thing in the morning. Had to go through my email. Had to check out other blogs. Had to immediately start in thinking about what I was going to blog about that day, and what photos I was going to use in the post. Had to edit the photos.

There’s nothing at all wrong with any of that.

But reading is one of my lifelong passions. I read a lot. I also review books and am committed to sharing my discoveries with you. Grabbing a half-hour to read before I go to sleep just doesn’t cut it. I have to carve out more time in the day to read. And that, really, is no sacrifice at all.

I’ve found it’s all too easy to let the online world take over. Though it’s wonderful and valuable and the source of a lot of information, and I, of course, use that world to write my blogs, it doesn’t hold a candle to being transported into a world made real by the words on a page.

So, I’m going back to my morning ritual pre-blogging, pre-convenient and nearby laptop. Coffee. A book. It’s a wonderful and peaceful way to start the day. I’m currently reading Murder in the Bastille  by Cara Black, number 4 in the Aimée Leduc series – ordered though my local library. A great series by the way, with rich, vivid descriptions of Paris, both old and beautiful and gritty and urban Paris.

And see? I’m even finding time to write my daily blog post. Yesterday, even after taking an hour or so to read my book, I found the time to write two  posts. Nothing lost, everything gained.

Happy Tuesday.

Worth the Wait

September 5, 2014 at 9:21 am by Claudia

FRIDAY morning glory old new bud

I can’t get enough of the beauty of morning glories. Every day, I am treated to a new feast for the eyes.

They really are the most wonderful last-days-of-summer treat. The day lilies are gone. The coneflowers are drying up. A few roses are blooming, as well as the rudbeckia. The morning glories have taken over center stage, thrilling us with their magical, ephemeral beauty.

I never get tired of them. It always seems to take forever for them to grow and produce buds, but they are well worth the wait.

And my hyacinth bean vine, also slow-growing this year, has produced some flowers.

FRIDAY hyacinth bean vine

I existed for so many years without a garden. I lived in dorms and apartments and all sorts of rentals that either didn’t have the space for a garden or where planting anything was a no-no. It wasn’t until we rented our Craftsman bungalow in San Diego that I made my first stab at a garden. It was in the backyard – a little plot right by the back door. (The same door that I walked out one day, only to trip and fall and break my left ankle, which resulted in my wearing a cast on that ankle for my wedding. Oh, yes.)

Then we moved out east and lived in a rental cottage. After a year or so, I asked the owners if I could put in a little strip of a garden alongside the house and they said yes. It was quite lovely. I wonder if it’s still there? I also planted a lot of pachysandra under the big pine tree right outside the front door. I hooked a hose up to the bathroom sink and snaked it outside through the window in order to water the plants. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

When we bought this house and moved in – nine years ago on August 30th – I knew I would finally be able to plant and nuture my own gardens.

I was in my fifties.

It took a long time, but it was worth it. And I treasure every minute of it.

I’ve written about my favorite bookstore, the Strand, on Just Let Me Finish This Page. Stop by to see just why I love it so.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
