Smashed Hydrangeas

July 7, 2019 at 9:36 am by Claudia

We had intense storms yesterday. Torrential rain. This is the result:

Yes, my beautiful hydrangeas were pummeled by the rain. I watched as it happened. My experience in the past tells me there’s no way to get them upright again. But I’m going to wait until later today when they’re not so rain-sodden and give it the old college try. Does anyone have any helpful tips?

The grasses in the big garden bed were also smashed down, but I’m pretty sure the sun and I can get them upright again. The hydrangeas? Doubtful.

Crap.

We watched Sense and Sensibility  last night, a movie I love but one that Don always thought of as a girls movie. I ran down the list of actors in the cast and he began to rethink his initial assessment. Then, as we watched it, he kept saying, “This is a wonderful movie.”

I told you so.

But Amazon Prime? I have a bone to pick with you. Your thumbnail description says: “Emma Thompson stars in the captivating romance based on Jane Austen’s classic novel of two sisters’ search for love in strict Victorian society.”

Ummm…a big fat NO. It takes place at the end of the 18th Century.

I wonder who wrote that little blurb? I’ve given Feedback to Amazon. We’ll see if it changes.

A while back at the start of spring, I mentioned that a couple of plants hadn’t come back, including the balloon flower.

I was wrong. It did come back and, not only that, it had self-seeded. So now there are 3 or 4 plants. This is what the flower looks like before it opens:

A little balloon.

Then, when it opens:

Aren’t they lovely?

Today, I’ll weed a bit since the ground is so wet. Have to pick up a book at the library. And I’ll work on the hydrangeas. (Sob.) And I’ll read. Mowing tomorrow, I think, the grass is pretty wet right now.

Happy Sunday.

Saturday Potpourri

July 6, 2019 at 10:50 am by Claudia

• One of my favorite things about summer – the tiger lilies that grow along the roadside. In this case, they are on the edge of our front lawn and on my neighbor’s lawn as well. The vivid splash of orange is so summery, so gorgeous.

• Normally, I don’t turn on the air conditioner until around noonish. Today? I switched it on at 9 am. It is so unbelievably humid out there that it feels like I’m living in the South or, as I remember well from doing a play there many years ago, Washington DC. Oh my goodness. We’re due for lots of thunderstorms today, which will break up the excess humidity. Tomorrow will be nicer.

There go my plans to do some weeding. I just can’t deal with humidity. I’ve never been able to. I remember summers as a kid where all I would do was lie in front of the window fan in my bedroom. Couldn’t move.

So it’s reading today – I know, what a sacrifice – and catching up on Gardener’s World. I’m way behind!

• I had a lovely time at lunch yesterday with Rick. He also came in so he could see the new sofa, which he likes very much. We’re going to go there on Tuesday for some French Toast.

• We watched The Wizard of Oz  last night on TCM. Did any of you watch it? We never tire of it.

• And finally, file this under “You Get What You Pay For”:

The national tour of Escape to Margaritaville, is, as you know, a non-union tour. When you use non-union actors, you end up with unseasoned performers who are lacking in skills and experience.

Case in point: 1) The lead role of Tully, who is a musician. The actor who played that role in La Jolla, on tour, and on Broadway not only acted and sang the role beautifully, he played the guitar as well, and his guitar was part of every song he sang. Live. Onstage. Every performance. That’s what the role calls for. If you’re cast in the role, it’s because you can act, sing, and play the guitar. In the tour, the actor playing the role will be faking the guitar because he can’t play. In other words, he doesn’t have the chops to do everything that the role requires. 2) The actor playing Don’s role – J.D. – which Don originated. The character is supposed to be in his seventies. They couldn’t find an older actor to play the role – I could have predicted that because what older actor worth his salt wouldn’t be in the union by now? – so the guy playing the role will be ‘aged’ to look 70.

Really Producers? Are you kidding me?

It’s like a high school production.

I’ll leave it at that.

Happy Saturday.

Tuesday Thoughts

July 2, 2019 at 10:22 am by Claudia

Talk about gorgeous! I planted this day lily last year and it is chock full of buds this summer – all that rain helps. I walked outside this morning to see that two of the lilies had opened. It’s funny, I sometimes forget what I planted and how it looked from year to year. This was a lovely surprise this morning.

We mowed like crazy yesterday. We were tuckered out. There’s still more to go but the front of the property, along with the corral, looks lovely.

I’ve never seen the gardens this lush. Even Don was commenting about it this morning. The hydrangeas are plump and gorgeous. There is more bee balm than ever, maybe a little too much. The day lilies have more blooms than normal and their bloom time is longer than usual. The peonies were better than ever, as were the lilacs. The endless rain that we had from April on was depressing at the time, but the payoff – and don’t we need one? – is the look of the gardens. Don was crediting me and, yes, I planted everything, but I quickly gave credit to the rain for the current abundance of blossoms.

I’m dithering between two books right now – not sure which one I want to read. Maybe I’m coming out of my long stretch with non-fiction and am heading back to my longtime love, fiction. I feel a change in the air!

An early morning shot of the living room and part of the kitchen. The sunlight is softening the edges of everything, so it looks a bit impressionistic.

I watched The Moon-spinners on TCM On Demand the other day. I remember loving that movie as a kid – I was a huge Hayley Mills fan. I also quickly developed a crush on Peter McEnery, her co-star. He was also in a Disney movie called The Fighting Prince of Donegal, another favorite. It was fun to watch it again. I snuck it in during the day as I knew Don would have absolutely no interest in it. Anyway, I read every Mary Stewart mystery when I was a a teenager. I still have many of those paperbacks, read over and over again. I was struck by the Disney take on the novel; the casting of younger actors, the decision to eliminate the sophistication of the characters (who smoked!) and the editing of the story down to a basic Disney plot that didn’t involve too much complexity. The book is far, far better. I’m now in the mood to re-read all my favorite Stewarts: The Ivy Tree, Nine Coaches Waiting, The Moon-spinners, Madam, Will You Talk?  and This Rough Magic. She was such a wonderful writer and I must admit I miss those cocktail-drinking, cigarette-smoking, sophisticated British heroines.

Don’t get me started on the Disneyfication of Broadway. That’s a subject for another day.

After the movie, I walked around the house talking like Hayley Mills. I think I’ve got her line delivery down. Lots of enthusiasm and a certain way of punching the final word of a line. It worked well for her when she was a child actor, not so well as a young adult. But oh, how I loved her at the time! I wanted to be  her!

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
