This little sprig of alstroemeria broke off a newly purchased bouquet about three weeks ago. I didn’t want to toss them, so I put them in a wine glass. They’re still going strong. I have three bouquets in vases scattered around the apartment and this morning I found myself wondering if they would still be going strong when I have to move back home on Saturday. And then what will I do? Answer: take them home, of course.

I seem to be going through a bout of insomnia. I’ve been taking a nice hot bath, reading a bit in bed, and then…I’m awake for 3 or 4 hours. It’s maddening. Thankfully, I slept until 9 this morning, so I don’t feel as fried as I did yesterday. And yes, I heard my neighbor coming home, but I was already sleepless so I can’t blame it on her! It’s me, I fear.

I don’t have a lot of exciting news to share with you. My days are fairly full of rehearsals and performances. In fact, I have to make this rather short so that I have time to email my notes to the actors.

It’s sunny today – huzzah! – which always makes me happy. Don is protesting today at a NY State Senator’s office about the attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin and several other notables are holding a mass rally at the Trump International Hotel in NYC on Thursday evening at 6:00. I’m not sure whether Don is going to that or not, but I passed the information on to him. I can’t march in the Women’s March, sadly, as I have to move home that day, but I know of so many women who are marching, either in Washington DC or in other cities across the country. Bravo! I’m with you in spirit.

Today: I’m watching the matinee at 2:00, then I’m coming back to the apartment, making dinner and  settling down to watch Sherlock  at 7 pm. To those of you who watch Sherlock: it’s on earlier this week because PBS is premiering Victoria  at 9. Victoria  doesn’t interest me. I know, I know, you think I’m crazy. But I’ve seen my fill of historical period costume dramas over the years (and remember, I work in a world that is full of sets and costumes and period details.) They just don’t interest me. As Don says: I don’t have any more rental space in my head for a new mini-series. I sort of feel the same way.

But I do plan on watching one of my all-time favorite movies on Monday night, It Happened One Night. I picked this up at Barnes & Noble a few weeks back. Don and I love this movie and I decided it should be in our personal library. Plus, after living in this space for a few weeks, I discovered there was a DVD player. (It’s so small and compact that I mistakenly thought it was a modem!) So I’m all set for my day off.

Happy Sunday.

A Little Bit of Everything

November 26, 2016 at 9:43 am by Claudia

11-26-sunnyhydrangea

On our second gloomy day in a row, I thought a sunny picture would be in order. Hard to believe, but I just took this about 3 days ago.

Low-key is a perfect description for life here in the cottage these days. After my spurt of energy sorting and purging the closet on Thanksgiving, I have reverted to my inclination to be lazy. I did rouse myself to drive to our local jeweler yesterday to get the battery in my watch replaced – a favorite watch that I had lost track of, but found – you guessed it – in the midst of my cleaning and sorting on Thursday.

And, on high alert, I stopped at the grocery store to get some more Peet’s French Roast. I’m not exaggerating when I say we go into a mild panic at the thought of running out and finding that our closest store is also out.  And that has happened, my friends. It isn’t pretty. We’ve tried just about every other French Roast out there, most often when we have no other choice, and while some are okay, none equal Peet’s.

Don’t you think Peet’s should hire me as a ‘brand ambassador?’

I’ve been reading the latest Lee Child, but – and I’m going to be frank here – I’m just not that into it. That is the first and only time I have ever said that about one of his thrillers. This one takes place in the past, when Reacher was still an enlisted man, and the premise is intriguing, but for some reason this one just seems too formulaic. Maybe it’s my mood, maybe because I’ve read all of the Reacher series, but I’m having to force myself to finish. I will finish, if only because I bought the darned book, but it is definitely not my favorite.

The latest SquintBox, which arrived in yesterday’s mail. The theme is ‘Good Cheer.’ Christmas presents, holiday cards, a shopping bag and box from Paris, a Plum Pudding Cake, and a glass bowl of holiday candies. My stash is growing monthly due to this neat subscription service!

Mini Pottery collection update. I’ve had to move some of the pieces to the top of this shadow box because I’m running out of room! (I’m not complaining.)

We watched Top Hat  on TCM yesterday. As the world’s biggest Fred Astaire fan – really, I am! – I’ve seen this movie many, many times. But I never tire of it. I’ve been an Astaire fan since I was a kid. There’s not much I don’t know about him. My dorm room and student apartments were dominated by a huge poster of Fred and Ginger dancing Cheek to Cheek, Ginger’s infamous feather dress looking gorgeous (and somewhat dangerous for Fred, as feathers flew everywhere.)

In times of stress and worry, which, let’s face it, this particular time is, a Fred and Ginger movie is the perfect prescription. There’s a reason their movies were such a hit during a time when the country reeled from The Depression.

Another movie that makes me happy? Tootsie. And that’s on TCM tonight at 8.

Another happy thing: our new weekend home delivery of the New York Times. I signed up for it at the beginning of the week. We now get the Friday – Sunday editions delivered to our little cottage. And they’re out there on the driveway early! We get up around 5:30 or 6 and the paper is already there.

I’m making good on my promise to subscribe to a newspaper or two as well as magazines that feature investigative journalism. Supporting a free press is imperative.

Happy Saturday.

Bees, Wildflowers, Pesticides and Photography

October 5, 2016 at 9:36 am by Claudia

The wildflowers down by the road are particularly lovely right now. These are asters, also called michaelmas daisies.

There were hundreds of bees; everywhere I turned there was a bee or two or three dining on a flower.

I wrote on Instagram yesterday about wildflowers. I don’t pick them. And I don’t do that for two reasons: others should be able enjoy them, just as I do, and most importantly, bees and birds need these flowers. They are vital and essential to the well-being of our friends. So, why would I pick something and take away the flowers, just for a day or two of ‘prettiness’ in the house?

I suppose that’s why I don’t pick flowers from my garden, either – I really only do it when they are about to kick the bucket, as when the peonies are threatened by torrential rains, or the roses by japanese beetles. Otherwise, they stay where they are. A hothouse raised bouquet will do for me.

Bees are being threatened. We need to do everything we can to help them survive. These flowers help. Not using pesticides – and I can’t stress this enough – will make a huge difference. The threat to bees has been directly linked, in part, to the use of pesticides. I have never used them in any of my gardens and I won’t ever use them. Yes, I get frustrated by the aforementioned japanese beetles, and aphids, and whatever other flying critters attack my flowers. But then I stop and remind myself of something: that’s the price I pay for keeping my gardens safe for bees and birds and butterflies and, yes, aphids and japanese beetles.

If I could urge one thing, I would urge you to rethink your use of pesticides – if indeed, you use them. By using them, we are contributing to the decline and possible extinction of species that are absolutely essential to the health of our planet. And really, I know this will sound blunt, but how selfish can we be if pristine prettiness is more important to us than birds, bees, and insect life?

End of sort-of-teacher-like-lecture.

We watched a fascinating documentary the other night. It is Finding Vivien Maier and it’s on Netflix. I had heard about Vivien Maier, but certainly didn’t know the whole story. Maier was a nanny who worked in the Chicago area for years. A man found a box of negatives at an auction and purchased it – what he found inside was hundreds and hundreds of boxes of negatives – all from a woman named Vivien Maier. He googled her name and there was absolutely no information about her. Eventually, he found out she had passed away and the search for more information about her started.

She always had her camera with her – a Rolleiflex – and she took the most incredible photos of people. Everywhere she went, she snapped a shot or two. Beautifully composed, humorous, touching – they are extraordinary.

The man who discovered her has spent years on his mission to bring her photographs to the attention of the public and of galleries. There have been exhibitions. There are now two books on her work.

She never got the acknowledgement of her talent while she was alive, but she is getting it now.

If you haven’t seen it, I hope you do. I found it very moving.

Another moonflower this morning; this one rather overwhelmed by the heavy dew of last night:

Sigh of happiness.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
