Books and Bookcase Dreaming

November 13, 2013 at 9:25 am by Claudia

How could you not love that face? Monty the cow has lived with us at least 10 years, maybe longer. We found him a little shop when we were living in our rental. The shop no longer exists, unfortunately. Monty is named for the town we lived in before moving to this cottage. His wide-eyed, slightly startled, but always gentle look is what sold us on him. A year or so after we acquired Monty, we rescued Riley, who had that same look in his eyes. Maybe Monty and Riley were really brothers, separated at birth? Clearly, I’m drawn to those big dark eyes. They say “Rescue Me.” And Don and I are most definitely rescuers.

Baby, it’s cold outside! We are in the middle of an Arctic blast that has caused the temperature to plunge. Despite the cold temps, we took our regular late afternoon walk yesterday. Don remarked that the walk wasn’t nearly as charming in the cold, cold weather. Ah well. We stuck to our guns and did it, that’s the important thing.

By the way, Don’s American Experience is supposed to air on January 7th on PBS. It always pays to check your local listings but that’s the official date. Mark your calendars.

I’ve also added a link on the navigation bar to my coaching website, in case you’re curious about that aspect of my life.

books

I’ve got a stack of books to get through. These are the books I have checked out from the library. I have another stack on the desk that I need to read for review purposes. And I’m nearing the end of How the Light Gets In. I find myself in that place that only occurs when reading a newly discovered and now favorite author. I can’t wait to see what happens, how the plot is resolved, but I know that the minute I close the cover, that will be it for my blissful Louise Penny reading experience until her new book comes out. And I really can’t prolong it because I have to read a book that is scheduled to be reviewed next Monday. Drat!

Okay. You’re probably sick of hearing about her. But truly, she is one of the best writers I have encountered. Ever.

densofanight

Since I’m thinking books, books, books all the time lately, I find myself staring wistfully at the wall that is behind the sofa in the den. Remember I said that I’d love to have built-in bookcases on that wall? The minute I saw this house for the very first time, I imagined them there. It’s now eight years later and, still, no bookshelves. There’s always something else that needs whatever spare cash we have on hand.

We don’t know any handymen. Or a carpenter. My husband is many wonderful things, but handy he’s not. I don’t have a relative living nearby that can come over and help me.

There’s also the fact that there is baseboard heating all along that wall and that has to be taken into consideration.

Here’s what I envision: shelves all the way to the ceiling with some crown molding at the top. Beadboard behind the shelves. The long stretch of bookshelves would be divided into sections. One section would be from the wall on the left to just past the screen. The next section would stretch from just past the screen to the window. This section would require a special shelf placement because I want that painting on the wall to stay there. So the shelves would be built around it. The next section would span the window, with a shelf just above the window frame and one below it. The final section would stretch from the right side of the window to the wall.

Can you picture that?

Now, if only a carpenter would magically appear on our doorstep, we’d be in business.

Happy Wednesday.

Saturday at the Cottage

Around the cottage on a Saturday morning:

The dried limelight hydrangea blossoms are from my garden, the little wooden box is an anniversary gift from Don and was made in Peru (and I see a white Scout hair on it!) Riley’s dish garden is growing and thriving, Don picked up the jade plant at our local farmer’s market, my current reading materials, and of course, Miss Scout.

It’s quite nippy this morning. I have a shawl around my flannel pajama clad body. Oh yes, I broke out the flannels about a week ago and you know that makes me happy. I finally re-shelved all my Shakespeare reference books. I was sick of seeing them in their Trader Joe’s tote bags, huddled in the corner of the bedroom where I dumped them three weeks ago. Now I have to sort out the big white cupboard that’s in the living room, so that I can shelve my script and research materials. That cupboard is long overdue for a toss and purge. I washed the slip cover that lives on the living room sofa – much better. Now I have to wash the one that covers the sofa in the den.

I’m slowly sorting, re-arranging (only a bit) and getting somewhat organized here after having been away for nine weeks. There’s much more to do, of course. In fact, it’s never ending. But I have to do it when I’m in the mood and somehow the cooler weather is helping in that regard.

The colors are spectacular in our neck of the woods. Leaf peepers and pumpkin and apple pickers pour into our area on the weekend. Why? Because we live in a beautiful place.

Happy Saturday.

Remembering Riley

August 20, 2013 at 8:33 am by Claudia

rileyyoungonporch1

On this date, one year ago, we said goodbye to our sweet Riley.

How can it be that a whole year has gone by since that day?

A year without his deep, beautiful brown eyes gazing at me. A year without his silky soft thick coat of hair that I loved to stroke. A year without his gentle, loving presence. A year without his joyous bark, accompanied by Scout’s, creating a doggie symphony. A year without that face. A year where the all-consuming hours spent taking care of him no longer exist but are faded, like a dream.

If you asked me if I would go through it all again if I could have him back, I would shout ‘Yes!’ No question.

Because, you know, the joy he gave us, the lessons he taught me about living with dignity and sweetness and grace in spite of a debilitating illness, the sheer blessing of his presence, are gifts that I will treasure forever. He was a challenge from the first day he arrived at our house and he pushed my buttons many, many times. I had a choice. Either grow and learn how to show him love unconditionally, no matter what he might do, or give up on him. Giving up on a living being that we had adopted was out of the question. He’d been abused and ignored in his previous life. He needed to have love and affection and unstinting commitment and care showered upon him.

Thank you, my boy, for all the lessons you taught me. Thank you for being my teacher. Thank you for gracing us with your blessed presence for 9 years. Thank you for choosing us as your forever family.

Scoutie misses you deeply. Daddy and I miss you every day, every hour. I’d give anything to have you back again but I know that you are free from pain wherever you are and wanting you back here with me, on this plane of existence, is selfish of me.

But we’re all basically selfish at heart, aren’t we?

Oh, my dear boy, where are you? What are you doing? Do you visit us? Do you watch over us from some place in the ether? Do you mysteriously appear to rest your head near Scout’s? Do you sometimes lick my hand like you used to?

I hope so.

All my love to you, dear boy. Your absence is felt deeply. Painfully. Heartbreakingly.

Thank you for everything.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
