Bricks, Roses & A Dwarf

June 13, 2017 at 7:43 am by Claudia

This is what was happening yesterday. And will be happening again today. The chimney is finally being re-bricked. It’s much more involved than I thought.

The local company we use is family owned, two brothers who are as honest as the day is long. I really like them. A great deal of work was done yesterday and today, about 75 bricks have to be put into place and then they’re done. Good thing, because we might have a thunderstorm later in the day.

Needless to say it was noisy and my car was hemmed in by their two big trucks, so I was stuck in the house, but really, I have nothing to complain about. They had to work outside in 93° heat and humidity. I was inside with the a/c going. Grateful this is finally being done.

No more blue tarp covering the chimney!

I managed to snag some bricks from the old chimney and they’re now stacked next to the porch. I can use them for garden borders.

Speaking of the garden:

Lordy, these roses are beautiful. (Homage to James Comey.)

I had another lucky, lucky eBay experience recently. I received an alert in my email telling me there was a Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs egg cup up for auction. I clicked on the link and, once again, there was the ‘Buy Now’ option at a great price. I couldn’t believe my luck!

Yesterday, all the way from Quebec, this guy arrived in my mailbox:

Hey there, Grumpy. Welcome.

And here is that mark:

This one brings my dwarf count to four. That means I yet to find Sneezy, Sleepy and Happy. And the elusive Snow White.

As it is, I had to put Grumpy on another shelf because there’s only room for three of them per shelf (the one hanging in the den.) I may have to rethink where they live. Maybe they deserve their very own shelf?

I love these guys and they’re hard to find, which makes them very collectible.

High temps again today with a break coming tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

Review & Giveaway: The English Roses by David Austin

April 1, 2017 at 10:22 am by Claudia

Today, I get to share a gorgeous book with you, The English Roses by David Austin. If you love roses, you have certainly heard of David Austin, the creator of English Roses and owner of one of the world’s leading rose nurseries, David Austin Roses. Whether you know of him or not, you’re in for a treat.

This is a sumptuous book, full of gorgeous photographs as well as essential information. It’s divided into three sections: Part One – The Origins and Nature of an English Rose; Part Two – A Gallery of English Roses; Part Three – English Roses in the Future and Rose Cultivation.

You’ll read about the rose and its ancestors, the qualities of an English Rose, the first English Roses, along with a host of helpful information.

Yes, I’d like a garden exactly like this one, please.

Part of the Gallery of English Roses.

This is in hardcover, 319 pages of beautiful photos and essential information. It is large – perfect for your coffee table.

I love roses, though I do battle with them every year! This book is a gem and I’m so enjoying what it has to offer, not the least of which is its sheer beauty.

One of you lucky readers will win a copy of this book. Just leave your name on this post and I’ll pick a winner on Tuesday night. Good luck!

Thank you again to Firefly Books for so generously sending me these gardening books and, in equally generous fashion, sending a copy to one of my readers. Beautifully done.

One of my readers mentioned that she received a questionable email from me. I’m assuming it’s from an earlier hack. If you get one, let me know what email it originated from. And don’t open it, of course.

Happy Saturday.

Tuesday (That’s All I Could Come Up With)

June 21, 2016 at 9:18 am by Claudia

When 71% of Americans favor some sort of gun restriction, even if it is simply background checks, and over 90% of Americans supported the measures being voted on yesterday, yet our representatives continue to vote down any legislation that would make that possible, well, I sit here once again, disillusioned, disheartened, and becoming more and more cynical by the minute. Shameful.

And that’s all I’ll say about that.

To maintain my sanity, I’m going to concentrate on my garden (as of yesterday.)

6-22 rosesandspirea

6-22 hollyhock

6-22 LEMrose

6-22 ALrose

6-22 spiderconeflower

It was so hot yesterday that photograph taking was kept to a minimum! But watering? That was ongoing. It should be a bit cooler today – not much – but a bit.

I made a little something for the TSP:

6-22 TSPdonotenter

I thought mini Don would like a little something to warn those well-intentioned friends who might open the sliding door without thinking, thereby ruining a recording.

6-22 TSPwelcome

The other side. The sign is hanging on a white knob, which is the head of a quilting pin that’s been cut down to about a quarter of an inch.

Some dusting and minor tweaking and we’re good to go for the big day.

Cross your fingers that Don likes it. I’m worried I’ve overhyped the whole thing and when he sees it, he’ll think, “That’s it?”

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
