One of my hostas – one I planted under the kitchen window last year – is just now blooming. What a lovely late summer surprise! It’s very, very shady back there, so I suppose that might be a reason for the late bloom.
The butterfly bush is blooming. But the flowers are very small. It, I think, needs more sun than it’s getting in the side garden bed, which has become increasingly shady over the past couple of years. I may move it in the spring. I think it would do a lot better in the big garden bed.
The air, the light, the leaves – autumn changes are in the air. Just like that. I’m not quite ready for summer to be over, but I find myself welcoming the golden light and the cooler mornings. Funny how that happens – our bodies and minds start to anticipate and adjust to the change in season and we find ourselves welcoming it.
I see leaves on our roof and on the ground. I hear some birds, but not nearly as many as earlier in the summer. That always makes me sad, as I miss their songs. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen a robin lately. I still hear the mourning doves and the catbirds and the wrens and sparrows and the Canada geese.
For example, right at this moment in the morning, 10 am, there is not a sound in the air.
School starts next week. The University just started classes this week. Change is in the air.
We just finished watching Trapped (an Icelandic mystery series) last week. Now we’re on to Dark, which comes out of Germany. Both are excellent. Trapped is on Amazon Prime, Dark is on Netflix. But I have to tell you, the finest series we’ve ever seen is Babylon Berlin on Netflix. It is beyond anything else, on every level. We’ve watched both seasons twice and are looking forward to the third season which should come around after the first of the year. Oh, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is coming back the first week of December. Can’t wait!
Reader Kathy did it again. I went to the Post Office to send off our monthly bill payments and checked the PO Box. Much to my surprise, a package was waiting for me.
To Kill a Mockingbird in Latin! Oh my goodness! I had no idea there was such a thing! Needless to say, I screamed a little bit. So did Don when he saw it. Well, maybe not a scream from Don, but a definite “Wow!”
Thank you, dear Kathy. It will now join my other TKAMs on the shelf in the den. What a beautiful addition to my collection!
Happy Thursday.
Oh, yay Kathy! And I love the colors on that cover!
Yes, Fall is in the air and it may be a bit before I welcome it. Every season it becomes a little harder to pack up and move on.
Especially hard as you have to move to Florida!
I spy the bee (?) on the butterfly bush!
Yep, it’s a bee. Thanks, Cathy.
Latin! Wow! Kathy rocks!
She does!
What a wonderful gift! I am sniffing the air for the change of seasons, but in far West Texas…it is still a heat wave.
It will come, but probably not for a while!
LATIN….wow!! Great find, Kathy! I didn’t know there were many book translations to Latin. I took 4 yrs of it in HS. I MIGHT be able to pick out maybe 4 words in that book.
My butterfly bush is in full bloom. The butterflies and the bees both seem to love it a lot!
At this time of the year it seems the robins all disappear for several weeks. I asked one of the village guys when they were doing yard waste clean up if they have seen any, and they said there are a lot on the river bank right now which is about 5 blocks away. Must be their vacation destination before they start their trip south.
Yes, it is definitely much cooler in the mornings and the shadows of the leaves are quite different as well. And it gets dark so much earlier now. Another trip around the sun continues.
Hope you have a grand Thursday. Cannot believe it is Labor Day weekend upon us! Seems like we were just planting on Memorial Day weekend!!!!
I can’t believe it’s almost Labor Day, either! How can that be?
Wow!
Thanks, Fiona!
I think I spoke too soon about Fall coming to my part of SoCalif because, despite the appearance of an autumn leaf or two, we’re in the dog days of August with ugly and oppressive haze; in a hot swamp and, making it worse, because I live in an agricultural valley, we’re currently also encased in area-wide fertilizer smell, the manure of which they try to cover up with some kind of chemical, which is even worse than the manure. I can’t stand going outside. It’s unhealthy. I miss being able to see the ocean from the foothills (there’s no clear view), and even our local mountains framing the valley are a pastel outline. The muck is just too thick. I envy you for the cool mornings but am glad you’re enjoying it with the quiet.
How many TKAMs do you have now, all languages and versions? I think it makes for an interesting collection; I never thought to do anything like that!
I have a few volumes in English (one is autographed by Harper Lee) and one from London. Also a volume in French, Spanish and Latin. Maybe 6 or 7?
Fascinating! I’ll be on the lookout for any volume to add to your collection; never know what can be found here & there.
How’s your sis doing on any hurricane preparedness in Florida? So scary. I remember the other time, when they threw furniture in the pool and put Little Z in a protective part of a closet. They didn’t want to move/evac their elderly dog whom I believe has now passed on.
It’s hitting the other side of the state – they’ll get a lot of rain and wind, but nothing as terrible as the east coast will get.
Oh, I’m so glad for them, that they are more safe than the ominous projections on The Weather Channel. Little Tybee Island near Savannah is gonna get slammed, looks like. I’ve always wanted to go there. Lots of colorful, vintage beach bungalows.
Those islands are charming, but are often in the direct path of a hurricane. I will be thinking of everyone who is lives in the path of this monster.
I can feel the changes and the first thing I always notice in August is how the light changes. I am a summer person, but summer lasts longer here in Georgia, so for that I am grateful. xo Laura
I am a summer person as well, but autumn around here is pretty darned gorgeous.
Fall is in the air. We brought down our Fall decorations from he attic. Kathy is a generous lady. Enjoy your “To Kill A Mockingbird” in Latin.
Marilyn
I will. Too bad I can’t read Latin!
A couple of years ago I started collecting more varieties of hosta. They definitely seem to have different bloom times. My latest hosta, didn’t bloom last year, but sent up a stalk and bloom that is a good 5 for tall. ( I wonder if it was making up for last year? ) My butterfly bush is also doing quite well…love to see the Monarchs visit it. I plan on getting another one for the front garden as well next spring.
Great gift from Kay! Enjoy your evening! ;)
I’m going to add more hostas to that garden bed under the kitchen window as it’s the perfect place for them!
I’m sure of one thing…you’ll have so much fun picking out new ones. There are hundreds of choices! ;)
I’m holding onto summer with every fiber of my being. Flowers reveling in the heat, warm evenings al fresco, perfectly ripe peaches, floating in Tahoe’s crystalline water. I’m a summer girl!
But I’ll follow Mother Nature’s lead and eventually welcome the honking of Canada geese, cool morning walks, crispy autumn leaves. Knowing the seasons inevitably change makes me appreciate what I possess all the more. Carpe diem!
Lake Tahoe is so beautiful. Visited many times in late spring (from the southern part of Calif to vacay spots north, with my first family/parents). Then, I got married there, on a cliff overlooking Emerald Bay at sunset, middle of summer. California side. Never been there in the winter or Fall; it’s on the bucket list!
Me too. But I do love having cooler mornings!
My book To Kill a Mockingbird in Portuguese is very old, I keep it with love, I read several times, in fact I discovered this blog doing research on it. Spring is coming here, thank God because winter here is dry.
There’s nothing better than well-loved book that you treasure, Edis.
thanks for the kind words.
glad i could find that book for you, claudia.
i don’t like the earlier sunsets that come with fall and winter, but am grateful for cooler days … i am much more productive, sleep better and so less cranky when it’s cooler out. :)
kathy in iowa
Me too. Much less cranky when the weather is cooler!
Please, please send some my way. I am sweltering in SoCalif. I crave COOL. We’re above normal in temps; I’m tired of being in the 90s with too much humidity and haze! We’re in for a scorcher of a Labor Day Weekend.
