Mowing, Raking, and a New Miniature

October 14, 2023 at 9:24 am by Claudia

Happy day, then a day of penance. I don’t really believe that, but it sure seemed to be the case yesterday.

Don took on the task of raking leaves and we had tons of them all over the driveway and upper parking area and in the corral. On the front lawn, too, but I took care of some of that. Don raked for a few hours and then moved all the leaves in to a big pile by the shed. While he was doing all of that, I mowed. I was going to mow the secret garden, which has been wet and soggy for a few weeks. I figured I couldn’t wait for it to fully dry, so I mowed. And then I thought I’d do the upper part of the lawn on the side of the house.

But then I looked at the grass and it was getting long, so I mowed a third of the lawn – the part that’s always the longest. I took a short break. Maybe I should tackle the middle section? Alright, I’ll just do that and leave the rest for another day. You know where this is heading – I ended up mowing the entire lawn. I haven’t done that in a long time. Usually, Don and I mow together, but since he was already raking, well…there you go. I also knew it was going to rain today.

But our reward was a dinner of crabbiless crab cakes, which had been slated for our anniversary, but Don was tired and we decided to save it for yesterday. Oh my goodness. Delicious.

Today is a day of rest for both of us.

Remember my telling you that I needed an inspiration piece for the dollhouse? It arrived the other day.

It’s a Knole sofa made by the extraordinary miniaturist, Joanne Shimakawa. A guy I know who is a longtime collector was auctioning off pieces from an estate and this was one of them. I ended up getting it for a good price – it was one of those auctions where, towards the end, one person is bidding against you. I raised my bid by a mere $10 and much to my surprise, the other bidder dropped out. I couldn’t believe my good fortune!

This sofa is so exquisite, so detailed. I simply cannot conceive of having this kind of skill. There’s even tiny piping. I felt the same sort of delight when I found the sofa that now lives in Dove Cottage. I’m not exactly sure where I’m going with the Beacon Hill – there is quite a bit of repair to deal with first – but I’m thinking ‘spare and elegant.’ Dollhouse lovers are collectors and there is always the temptation to cram the rooms full of amazing miniatures. I get it – I often have that urge, as well. But my budget is limited and this time around, I’m going to consider that a plus, not a minus.

It’s currently sitting in the living room of the Beacon Hill, but I’ll soon be moving it to a safe place, as the rooms with dark walls are being primed.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Synchronicity and the Kindness of Strangers

October 13, 2023 at 8:41 am by Claudia

Twenty-five years ago, this wonderful man named Chuck officiated at our ceremony. The words he used really resonated with us, they reflected the way we felt about our commitment to each other. At the end of the ceremony, he gave us two white roses, and asked us to exchange them. They symbolized our love for each other. He asked that we rededicate ourselves to each other and our marriage every year on our anniversary and that we exchange a white rose.

We have done that many times over the years. Not every year, life gets in the way. We decided to do it this year. So we got two long-stemmed roses from our local florist and, on a spectactularly sunny day, we drove up the mountain to a favorite overlook where we can see the Hudson Valley far below. There were already a few people there and we wanted a bit of privacy for our exchange, so we waited in the car for a bit. Three youngish people (2 men and a woman) who had been standing there got back in their car. Another guy was a hanging around, but just him, so we got out of the car and walked to the overlook. I said that we should grab the opportunity because this was a rare break in the stream of people that would appear. We turned to each other and said the words that were in our hearts and exchanged roses and kissed. Suddenly, we heard the sound of clapping. The three people in the car had been watching us and were applauding us! We told them that it was our 25th wedding anniversary. More applause. The beautiful young woman was hanging out of a window and Don asked her if she could take our picture. Yes. She climbed out of the car and took Don’s phone, crouching down to get just the right angle. I had heard her say that all three of them were photographers, but Don hadn’t. So, he started to say “Make sure you get the valley in the background” and she assured him that she knew what she was doing. She took a couple photos, congratulated us, we thanked her profusely, and they pulled out of the parking area.

Synchronicity, timing. We were a little late leaving our house to go get the roses, but actually, we weren’t. We got there right when we were supposed to be there. We were so moved by their spontaneous applause, by their generosity and their kindness. In view of what is happening in the world, this was the reminder we needed; there are good people everywhere. Truly good people.

We drove down to our local college town because it was such a beautiful day and decided to get a veggie burger from a place called Moonburger. It’s just opened up in this town, there’s another one just north of us. I had heard very good things about it. It’s the kind of place where you order to-go and you eat elsewhere. The guy behind the counter was so nice and when he heard it was our anniversary he gave us free tickets for a future burger and milkshake and saw us off with a “Happy Anniversary!” Again, kindness. Goodness.

At Moonburger, waiting for our order.

We headed back to the car and realized we were right outside our favorite chocolate shop. We love their chocolates and one of the draws is their selection of sugar-free chocolates. We haven’t ordered from them for months because they’re expensive. (We also never eat out because…it usually costs too much money.) But we looked at each other and said “It’s our anniversary!” So we walked in the door and were greeted by everyone as long-lost friends. As we stood in front of the counter, I said to Don, “What did I order before?” And the woman behind the counter – who was taking care of someone else –  immediately said, “the marshmallow and the chocolate truffles.” I couldn’t believe she remembered. Then a few minutes later, I said “how many did I buy?” She heard me and answered “a dozen of each.” Again, I couldn’t believe that with all the traffic this place gets she remembered my usual order after several months – maybe even a year. Everyone was so kind and helpful and we knew that the day and everything we’d done was meant to be. Everywhere we turned, we ran into good people.

We needed that. Not just because it was our anniversary, but because it is easy to lose faith in people, to look on everyone else as a potential political enemy or simply as a stranger who you most likely have nothing in common with. It’s easy to lose faith in our fellow man. It really felt as if the universe was guiding us through the day, telling us to let go of any control we might want to impose. Just be. Be open, be happy, and watch what happens. We didn’t erect any social barriers and good people appeared everywhere.

It was an amazing experience.

Look for the goodness in people. Expect it. You will not only find it, but your life will be better for it.

A beautiful day.

We are blessed.

Thank you for your beautiful comments and congratulations on our anniversary. I am blessed by your presence in my life.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Flowers and an Anniversary Tomorrow

October 11, 2023 at 9:28 am by Claudia

Our limelights are spectacular this year! They’re a very deep pink now.

Still sickened and horrified at the news from Israel and Gaza. Still completely disgusted with the shenanigans in Washington DC. I am escaping into a mystery that I’m reading and that helps. I’m also starting to do a little priming on the Beacon Hill because I’ve had it at least three years and haven’t done much of anything. I need to force myself to work on it even though I’m not particularly motivated. I did find an amazing piece of furniture that will serve as my inspiration piece. It should arrive here tomorrow. That’s what helped me with the Dove Cottage renovation – one piece that I had already purchased (the sofa) with a new project in mind.

But there is a lot to do before I start any kind of decorating. I’ve noticed lots of things that need to be repaired or replaced. I briefly thought of selling it but I’ve since scotched that idea.  I figure: I have it,  I really wanted it, and once I get a rhythm going, I’ll enjoy working on it.

In other news:

Don and I then: the morning after our wedding in Nevada City, CA.

Don and I now (or nowish):

A little calmer, not quite so ecstatic, quite a bit older and wiser, more in love than ever.

Tomorrow, October 12th,  is our 25th wedding anniversary.

It’s a big deal to us, especially since we didn’t meet and eventually marry until we were in our forties. 25 years! Next year, we’ll have been together for 30 years. I’ve written about our story on this blog many times. You know how we feel about each other.

A good marriage takes work. We work very hard at our marriage. I’m proud of us; two people who were a bit damaged when we met each other, but miracle of miracles, were ready to take a leap into the unknown. We were honest with each other from the very beginning and were willing to reveal our fears and frailties. I honestly think that’s what made the difference.

That, and being soul mates.

I am so, so grateful for this man. There’s never a moment when I don’t feel loved and adored and I know that Don feels the same way. He helps me be a better person. He is the best man I know.

So, Happy 25th Anniversary to us! We did it!

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
