Mockingbird Hill Cottage
I wanted to pass along the sad news that Judy Clark’s husband, John, passed away this morning. For those of you who know her and love her, this news will be very sad indeed. Judy wrote me about it a short time ago.
I had the pleasure of speaking to John one evening for quite a while and found him to be delightful and charming and everything good, as I knew he would be.
Judy and John were devoted to each other. Let us hold them in our hearts.
My favorite time of the evening; not fully dark, on its way to being dark, with blacks and deep blues and the moon shining brightly.
Mysterious. Magical. Simply lovely.
I have much to do around here, but I don’t seem to be doing it.
I want to put shelves in the den, but I’ve decided I want Don’s input before I do it. So that has to wait until next week.
I want to start painting the kitchen, but I need Don’s help moving things and keeping Scout out of the kitchen. So that has to wait until next week.
I was going to re-caulk the bathtub because whatever I did the last time didn’t work very well. But hacking away at the old caulk, cleaning that all up, applying the new caulk, waiting for it to dry? Too many hours. And I find I’m not in the mood to tackle it at the moment.
I do have to go to the laundromat. Today. Sigh.
Oh, it’s not that I’m a stranger to laundromats. If I had some sort of running tally of how many times I’ve been to a laundromat, I’m sure I would be astounded. Many years of apartment living = many years of laundromats. I remember when I moved into a new apartment at the beginning of my last year of graduate school. There was a washer and dryer in the building. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.
But then I moved to Boston for my first teaching job and it was back to the laundromat.
It does change the way you think of things. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had the thought, “I’ll just throw that in the washer” since I’ve been back, only to remember that my washer doesn’t work. Again, a First World Problem. And in the end…annoying, but no biggie.
So today I gather everything up, drive to the neighboring town, take along my Kindle, and do some laundry. I can People Watch, too.
T-minus two days and counting until Don is home again. He’s still suffering from that cold, very like the one I had. The coughing stage hangs on for dear life. He needs to be with his girls. That’s the best medicine.

On the First World Problems list, there’s good and bad news.
Good: The other Emmie Blind that my sister found in Tampa arrived in my mailbox yesterday. Huzzah!

Gosh, I love these blinds.
The look is so much cleaner. Since we have a room filled with much loved furniture and decorative items, not to mention a piano and a dollhouse, cleaner and crisper is the way to go on these windows.
The bad news: I got an email from PayPal and then another from eBay saying my order for the fourth Emmie Blind had been canceled and my money refunded. Apparently the seller had neglected to adjust her inventory and the 31″ blind was no longer available.
I was not a happy camper.
I cannot find any more blinds in the 31″ length on eBay – or anywhere. I’m so disappointed! If any of you, even those of you who live in foreign countries, see one, please grab it for me? I tend to think that won’t happen, but hope springs eternal.

I added the runners to our hardwood floors in the kitchen.

They really help Dame Scout as she navigates the kitchen. She always walks between the island and the kitchen counter, then turns and walks to her water dish. No short cuts. She has her path and she sticks to it.

Oh, this time change is messing with me! I went to bed early because my body told me it was an hour later than what I read on the clock. Consequently, I was up at 5:30 am.
Do not like.
Remember to vote today. Though I am about as disillusioned and cynical as they come about our government these days (and that means everyone involved) and a country which seems to favor corporations and big money over people, I still have a wee bit of hope. Even if I didn’t have hope, I would still vote. It’s a right that we shouldn’t take for granted. We’re now seeing people who have faithfully voted all their lives turned away at the polls because of Voter ID laws. I can’t imagine how that must feel.
My mom never learned to drive. Therefore, she had no driver’s license. Would she have been turned away at her advanced age? Don’t get me started.
So get out there and vote.
