Homesick

June 22, 2014 at 8:42 am by Claudia

Today is opening day here at the Chautauqua Institution. There are all sorts of activities that we are encouraged to take part in. Tonight is a barbecue for the theater company.

But I’m tired.

There are currently 5 of us in the apartment, as the lighting designer’s wife and little daughter are spending Sunday with us. The little girl is adorable and everyone couldn’t be nicer, truly, but I am so missing my alone time. It’s awfully hard to be social all the time, to have to make conversation, to adjust to the noise level here – although all of us try our best to not be intrusive.

But it’s making me crazy.

I’m a bit too old for all of this. In fact, I am quite a bit older than my thirty-something roommates. But I keep telling myself that it must be equally as hard for them as it is for me.

One more week.

I’m homesick. I want my quiet little cottage and my sweet dog and my husband. I want my solitude in the embrace of my family.

Here are some flowers I discovered on my walks around Chautauqua.

There are lovely gardens everywhere. The residents really do beautiful things with their little plots of land – as well as the porches that are such a key part of the look of Chautauqua.

Tomorrow I am going to visit the miniature shop. I’m really looking forward to that…a little time to myself, off on my own, looking at dollhouses and miniatures. Sounds like a slice of heaven right about now.

Happy Sunday.

The Heron and I

June 21, 2014 at 8:01 am by Claudia

Friday morning brought a walk down to the lake. The beaches weren’t open for swimming yet, some fishermen were out on the lake, and I got to spend some time drinking in the lake’s beauty.

I found a deserted dock.

Wait…not so deserted. A Great Blue Heron and I shared the dock. As I crept closer, the heron maintained his still, graceful stance.

Closer and closer.

Pretty good for an iPhone. But oh, what I could have done with my big girl camera!

Some boaters came near and he got a little fidgety, then he stopped, leaned over the dock, peering into the water, flew down and came up with a fish in his mouth. But alas, our time together was disturbed by the boaters and he flew over to the next dock.

But what a lovely time we had together, he and I.

Happy Saturday.

On the Road: More of Chautauqua

June 20, 2014 at 8:09 am by Claudia

Chautauqua isn’t only charming cottages and a beautiful lake. It is also music, art, theater, dance buildings, studios and practice rooms. It is performance spaces and halls. And it is far more even than that, but this is what I have discovered so far. Soon, when the season opens on Sunday, there will be scores of music, art, theater and dance students. There will be the sounds of music wafting up from practice rooms. There will be lectures and events in the amphitheater and other venues. There will be even more that I have yet to discover.

Music studios. There are also art studios that look much like this, as well as dance studios.

One of the performance venues.

More music buildings.

The famous amphitheater, complete with organ.

That sign reads: The oldest continuous book club in America. Hey fellow readers, these guys have us all beat in terms of longevity.

chautauqua -episcopalchurch

I had to include this, the sweetest little church I’ve ever seen. Episcopal, by the way.

The rain that has been a part of almost every day I’ve been here, along with big old crackling thunderstorms, has disappeared. Truly lovely weather has taken its place. We have two more long days of rehearsal in the rehearsal room. Sunday will consist of Opening Day festivities. And on Tuesday, we will start teching the show. (I just had a fight with auto correct, which wanted to make ‘teching’ into ‘etching.’)

My roommates arrive today. One is the costume designer and the other is the lighting designer. It will be strange having to suddenly adapt to two others in this apartment. I’m a solitary person, remember? I sort of dread it and look forward to it at the same time. We’ll all be busy, so I expect we won’t be spending a whole lot of time hanging around the apartment. Wish me luck!

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
