A New Path (In More Ways Than One)

June 16, 2014 at 7:12 am by Claudia

I have never been what I would consider athletic. I’ve always avoided exercise, simply because it bored me and I couldn’t commit to an exercise regimen even though I knew that I should do something. Add to that the fact that I used to be very tall and very thin, could eat anything I wanted and not gain a pound. Now I was facing a very different body, one that I didn’t recognize or like. Something had to change.

I am convinced that part of my downfall is my love of sweets. Oh boy, do I have a sweet tooth! So last December, I cut out all refined sugar and stopped buying or making pastries, cookies, pies, and cakes. No candy. Nothing but fresh fruit or, in a pinch, canned fruit with no sugar added.

The pounds started coming off. My ‘exercise’ this past winter came in the form of shoveling mountains of snow. But now that spring is here, my husband (who is as averse to exercise as I am) and I have started hiking.

Yes, you read that right – hiking.

I love to walk. I lived in cities for years and nothing made me happier than to take off for the day, traveling for blocks and blocks, observing people, looking at shop windows, all the time walking briskly. That’s the kind of exercise I like.

But now we live in the country on a country road that, ironically, gets as much traffic as a city street without the benefit of sidewalks. What to do?

We live at the foot of a mountain ridge and there are several parks or preserves up on the ridge. One of those preserves was offering a free pass for a month to local residents. We took them up on their offer. And for the past month, we have been hiking high up in the mountains, covering at least 4 to 5 miles on each hike, gazing out at the spectacular views in this part of the Hudson Valley – feeling good. Feeling more fit.

vistafromthemountaintop This has become our new regimen. No refined sugar. No fattening baked goods. Healthy food. Hiking.

It’s been exciting and it’s definitely a new path for us, one that we feel very good about. Wait a minute…have I finally discovered a healthy exercise regimen that I like? Is it as simple as walking?

Yes.

We barely recognize ourselves! Who are these two hikers?

Just goes to show that it’s always possible to make a positive change.

Back At The Ranch

June 15, 2014 at 8:48 am by Claudia

I had no idea what day of the week it was when I woke up this morning. Monday? Saturday?

I finally hit on Sunday.

Where am I?

I feel like I’m in Brigadoon. Out of the fog, a magical and utterly charming little town springs up on the shores of a lake. Since it’s very foggy this morning, I am going to go with that fantasy. Chautauqua is by far the prettiest place I’ve ever coached. No contest.

Today is my day off, so I will be walking around Chautauqua taking iPhone pictures. I am now regretting my decision not to bring my big girl camera. I keep looking for it. It feels like I’m missing an appendage. But at the last minute, with a full suitcase and a large canvas bag filled with laptop, paperwork, chargers, and back up hard drive, I just couldn’t face the task of trying to fit it in.

Live and learn.

Sunday Cottage daisies

I picked some daisies from the edge of the road and put them in a plastic glass which is now a vase. No, I’m not a member of the Chautauqua Golf Club.

How about some more pictures of what’s blooming back at the ranch? I miss my garden. But I don’t miss all the weeds that have taken up residence after all the rain we’ve had this week.

Sunday Cottage rose

Sunday Cottage Lantana

Sunday Cottage Catalpa

The catalpas are about to bloom. I won’t be there for that. Sob.

Sunday Cottage sprirea

The spirea was just starting to bloom when I left.

Sunday Cottage peony

I told Don to go cut some peonies and put them in a vase. I’m sure the rains have beaten them down to the ground and I hate to think of them lying there. If I was home, I’d have taken care of that.

Sunday Cottage rose2

Sigh. So gloriously beautiful.

It’s Father’s Day. Happy day to my dad and to the father of this one:

Sunday Cottage Scoutie

I miss that little scamp. Fortunately, the stage manager has a dog named Stella. If you can’t find me at rehearsal, I’m probably petting Stella and scratching her tummy.

A quick story: there is a scene in the play where the Younger family is packing their things, preparing for a move. The young actress who is playing Ruth Younger has a lot of stage business to do during that scene. While she’s talking, she’s constantly packing things from the living room. During the staging of the scene, she grabbed the 1950s-era phone from the table, ready to shove it in a box. The director said, “Whoa! You can’t pack that.” She looked surprised. So we proceeded to explain to her that there was a time when you didn’t own your phone, when you actually rented it from the phone company.

That was an entirely foreign concept to her.

Boy, do I feel old!

(You can follow along on my Instagram feed if you want to see the most recent photos of my adventure here in Chautauqua.

Happy Sunday.

Some of the Cottages of Chautauqua

June 14, 2014 at 8:40 am by Claudia

It has been gray and rainy all week but yesterday, between rainstorms, I grabbed some morning free time to explore Chautauqua. The website for the Chautauqua Institution gives this description of the community:

Chautauqua Institution is a community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York state that comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 visitors will stay at Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages—all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village.

Self-improvement through lifelong learning was at the heart of the impulse that motivated Americans and founded Chautauqua in 1874. Chautauqua’s tradition of self-improvement through lifelong learning continues today through a variety of programs aimed at the exploration and exchange of ideas in an atmosphere that encourages civil discourse.

There are communities like Chautauqua scattered around the country, all founded with the same ideals in mind; Oak Bluffs in Massachusetts and DeFuniak Springs in Florida, among them. Chautauqua, where I am, was the first, and the word ‘chautauqua’ was often used to describe other communities in this movement.

Besides the obvious draw of speakers and music and theater and opportunities for learning, the Victorian cottages that sprang up in Chautauqua are a feast for the eyes. These homes are often held onto through succeeding generations. Some are summer homes. But there is also a year-round community here of about 300 residents. In the summer, the numbers jump to the tens of thousands.

I took some photos yesterday to give you an idea of why I am gasping every time I walk down a narrow path or road. It’s gorgeous here.

Lots of the cottages have names, like this one.

chautauqua - favorite porch

Almost all of them have incredible porches with wicker furniture and charming details. This one? I fell in love. Check out the blue wicker chair, the shutters around the blue door, that table with framed photo, the cupboard on the wall. Sigh.

chautauqua - farmhousestyle

This farmhouse-style cottage had an incredible cottage garden. You can see the white wicker chairs on the porch. And if you look a little closer, you’ll see this:

chautauqua - pinkwicker

That pink wicker rocker is calling my name. Adorable!

chautauqua - cottageconstruction

There’s lots of construction and landscaping going on right now. The ‘season’ here starts in 10 days or so. I wish I could have captured what was inside the front door of this cottage. I could see a new vintage-y looking kitchen island with beautiful pendant lighting.

These narrow cottages really evoke the Chautauqua movement for me. I’ve seen countless photos of them over the years.

Here’s a perfect example. Could you die? The gingerbread, the upper balcony, the charming screen door….it’s like a dollhouse!

chautauqua - signs

There are shops, lecture halls, restaurants and all of it is on the shores of Chautauqua Lake.

Heaven. I could live here quite easily and I told Don that in no uncertain terms.

More later. I have a day off tomorrow and it just might be sunny.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
