East or West….

July 9, 2013 at 7:30 am by Claudia

Before I forget, I did a post about the Hummingbird Moth last year, which you might want to visit if you want to see a couple more pictures of these intriguing creatures.

Speaking of moths and/or butterflies, I spied this beauty through the kitchen window and managed to snap a few pictures. Again, I used my older camera with the zoom lens, which was handily nearby on the kitchen table.

He’s enjoying the milkweed.

butterfly3

Identified as the Great Spangled Fritillary. And, according to the description, they love milkweed.

The heat and humidity slogs onward here. Unrelenting. Temps in the nineties with 90% humidity make for a tropical rainforest-like atmosphere. I am mostly staying inside but I try to grab a few minutes here and there to pull some weeds, fill the birdbath and water my seedlings. The seedlings I am now thinking won’t turn into anything pretty until after I leave for Hartford.

I can’t go there. Away from home again? Leaving the day after my husband returns from being away from home?

And frankly, Hartford is nice but there’s not a lot to blog about and this will be my third go-round there. I’ll have to resort to pictures of my navel.

Rest assured, I kid. Sort of.

hensandchicks

I plopped this Hens and Chicks in the ground last year. It consisted of one hen and one chick. When I checked it out after a long winter, I was pretty sure it would wither away. Things were not looking good. But look! It has revived and there are a lot of chicks growing alongside their mama. Succulents are fascinating to me.

Today is a driving day. We leave early to transport Don back to Williamstown. This is when I wish I could blink my eyes and magically transport myself to another place. Or, in this case, transport Don to another town in another state – all without my having to drive in this awful weather. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just plop ourselves down in another place? No gasoline, no tolls, no long, long drive. We’d arrive refreshed and restored and everyone would be happy.

East or west, home is best.

Happy Tuesday.

What I’m Crazy For on a Monday

July 8, 2013 at 9:12 am by Claudia

coneflower

I’m certifiably coneflower crazy.

daylily

And more than a little daylily crazy.

But if we were holding some sort of contest, coneflowers would win. Daylily blooms, true to their name, last a mere day and then they’re gone. Gorgeous, especially the one pictured above, but fleeting. Coneflowers are beautiful, grow taller and taller each year and last for most of the summer. Then when winter comes around they provide food for the birds. And they spread. I mean, how can you not love these guys?

The three of us – Don, Scout and me – are enjoying a couple of days together before Don returns to Williamstown tomorrow. I know from experience that, after being away a few weeks, it’s a bit jarring to suddenly be back in your cozy permanent home for a couple of days after having lived in your not-so-cozy temporary home. When Don got home he kept saying, “It’s so colorful here. There’s so much color!” After living in the white-walled, stark rooms of his ‘dorm’ he was struck by all of the color that I take for granted here. Half of the time I don’t even see it because I’m so used to it.

But it’s a good reminder how powerful color can be. And you know that I love color; not for me the all white and neutrals look. Here we have splashes of red and turquoise and green and yellow and cream. Pottery is everywhere, some of it in sherberty McCoy colors, some it in the deeper blues and greens of Roseville. There’s a vintage laundry basket full of colorful yarn in the den. We balance it all out with the golden tones of our pine floors and oak coffee table, the darker finishes on the piano, sideboard and music cabinet and the creamy colors of some of the painted furniture. And that’s just the main floor.

Don’s been living in a dorm with a common room. No decorations, nothing on the walls, no air conditioning in this never-ending stretch of high humidity and high temperatures. Then suddenly, he’s back in our cottage, air conditioner whirring, color everywhere. A bit overwhelming, I think. I will be living in a neutral environment when I head back to Hartford. I understand. I, however, always pack pops of color that I can add to the rooms I’m living in. Don doesn’t. He’s a guy.

hummingbirdmoth

Changing the subject, yesterday I stood in front of the hanging plant on the porch and snapped dozens of pictures, all the while trying to capture the elusive hummingbird moth. He darted so quickly from flower to flower that I could barely keep up with him. This is the best of the bunch.

And I heard a little tapping way up in the catalpa tree and saw this beauty.

downywoodpecker

A downy woodpecker. Thank goodness I have my old camera, which has a telephoto option on its single lens. I keep it on the kitchen table just for opportunities like this one. This guy was way up in the tree.

A telephoto lens for my newer camera is on my wish list, but in the meantime, this does very nicely.

I’m also camera crazy.

Coneflower, day lily, color and camera crazy. That’s enough for today.

Happy Monday.

My Daily Ritual

July 7, 2013 at 9:39 am by Claudia

lantana

Let me clarify my statement on yesterday’s post. I will be posting as usual this week. I’m not taking a week off from blogging, I’m just not doing A Favorite Thing this week. I will be too busy next weekend to visit each linked post and leave a comment and I take that responsibility seriously. We’ll be back up with A Favorite Thing the next week.

Actually, the thought of taking a week off from blogging fills me with a wee feeling of panic. I rely on this daily blogging journal to keep me grounded. I rely on it to keep me sane. Every morning I wake up, pad downstairs to let Scout out, brew some coffee, which I then carry into the den. Scout gets into the ‘tunnel’, I pop open my laptop, check my email, visit a few blogs and then, when I’m sufficiently awake, I start to think about the day’s post. I choose some photos to edit. Often, the theme of the post will spring from the photos. At other times, I have an idea for that post percolating in my head and I go through my photos to find something that will enhance my thoughts for the day or I take some photos right then and there. Either way, the vast majority of my posts evolve from how I feel that day, that morning.

Like today: I’m feeling a little foggy, my head is full of congestion, Don came home unexpectedly yesterday for a couple of days after finding out he had the day off today so my schedule has been thrown off a bit, I’m drinking coffee and wondering why it’s taking me so long to wake up and I woke with the thought that I had to clarify the words I used in yesterday’s post. And so a post begins that evolves into a peek into a my daily blogging ritual.

ditchlilies

I count on this ritual to focus my often all-over-the-place thoughts into some sort of coherent narrative. I need that. I don’t know what I did before I blogged.

Well, I do know what I did. I read whatever book I was reading at the time. That was my morning ritual, with a healthy dose of coffee. I still read all the time, as you well know, but the mornings now are a time to read the latest headlines from the New York Times online, visit other blogs and write my post for the day. I usually finish it before Don gets up but not always. Don’s “Are you writing?” has become one of his first questions of the day. Because if I am writing, he doesn’t like to disturb me. The same goes for him. If the guitar is out, I ask “Are you writing a song?” Because I don’t want to disturb the creative process.

Yesterday, when it turned out Don was on his way home, courtesy of another cast member driving back to NYC, we arranged a meeting point where he could be dropped off. I drove 45 minutes or so to get there and amazingly, they pulled up a minute after I did. I was introduced to everyone and Caitlin, whose husband was ferrying everyone home, said Don had showed her my blog and that she loved my photography. That’s gratifying. But what is even more gratifying is that Don regularly touts my blog to everyone he knows – often when I am right there beside him. He gets it. He knows how important this little piece of real estate is to me and how deeply the daily ritual of blogging has become woven into my life.

I don’t know what I would do without it. Truly.

Now, here we are, a post nearly completed, my brain focused, my thoughts put on virtual paper. I’ll edit a bit, think of a title and when I’m sufficiently pleased with it, I’ll hit Publish.

Nine times out of ten, I’ll go back and edit a bit more after I see the post on the page. I’ve been known to edit a post a day or so later if necessary. The other day I noticed I’d used it’s instead of its on a previous post. I went back in and changed it. Once a teacher, always a teacher. Once a perfectionist, almost always a perfectionist. (I’m working on that one.)

What’s your blogging ritual? How has blogging changed your life?

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
