I Love Lucy

July 24, 2022 at 9:50 am by Claudia

I realize I’ve posted a lot of doll pictures this week, but it’s been a big week for dolls. Two new dolls arrived in the mail and another is in customs in NYC.

So, my little one from Ukraine arrived yesterday after a delay in which she traveled to Denver, CO and back. I had to sign for her, so I was listening for the USPS truck for a couple of hours. I was very happy to finally get that package.

Lucy is here. She’s my scrappy, feisty girl. She’s named after her creator, who is called Lusy.

This is what she was wearing when she arrived.

I love the ruddy tones in her complexion; very different than my other girls. She was customized by (at) Lusisiz on Instagram, a woman who lives with her family in Kiev, Ukraine. They have never left the city during the war, and I pray they can remain there safely.

Lucy embodies the fighting spirit of Ukraine. In fact, one of the packages I received this week was from another customizer in Ukraine, who designed these t-shirts to raise money for the war effort. Needless to say, my second photo of Lucy was always going to be in the t-shirt.

She’s so darned cute!

But here’s what went wrong: I received the package, came inside and opened it, and the doll was in two pieces!

Photo proof:

I was in shock. Lucy has what is called a neck modification – a lot of customized Blythes do, as the unmodified Blythe always looks down. (Sophie and Maeve haven’t been modified and it’s a pain in the tush to photograph them.) I quickly messaged the seller and showed her the photo. She was in shock, she couldn’t figure out why that happened and showed me the photo of Lucy in one piece in the box, ready to be mailed. I tried to put her back together by watching various videos, but the ball joint wasn’t fully enclosed inside the head and I couldn’t get it right. I was so frustrated!

She offered to send a video of showing how to put the doll back together – it’s a bit complicated. Since it was 10 pm in Ukraine and they are subject to a curfew with lights out and curtains closed, it was too dark to send me a video so we decided to wait until today. But about an hour later, I decided to try once more, and I did it! It was not easy, but in the course of all of this, I realize that I now know how to open up a Blythe doll and install a neck joint. There’s a bit more to it than what I had to do yesterday but I think I can do it. Heads up, Sophie and Maeve, your time is coming.

I immediately texted the seller and told her not to bother with the video. She peppered me with questions: show me photos so I can be sure the head moves back and forth, up and down, and to the side. So I did.

Now, I know what to do!

That being said, there’s no way, if the head has been screwed shut, which it was, that the ball joint can come out of the head. No way. So I’m wondering if customs somewhere opened up the doll to check for contraband of some kind. Then, not being able to put it back together correctly, they just closed the head and left the body separate. It’s a bit chilling, frankly.

Okay. I was waylaid by a call from my sister, so I have to get this published.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Flowers and Clothes

July 23, 2022 at 8:44 am by Claudia

It’s so beautiful and cool outside this morning that you’d never know the temperature is going to reach 95° today. That means the heat index will be well over 100°. Same for tomorrow. Lately, I’ve had to grab some time on the porch early in the morning or not at all (except for the endless watering that has to happen during this heat wave.)

As I sat on the porch, I had a wave of gratitude for our property. From my perch on the glider, I saw all the flowers on our porch and beyond that, so many beautiful shades of green. A chipmunk ran by my feet, completely surprised by my presence. I heard a mourning dove and a carolina wren. Yesterday, I saw three goldfinches chasing each other in and out of our bushes.

The rose of sharon has started blooming. I’m so thrilled. A few years back, I brought a tiny cutting home, courtesy of my friend Noble.  Actually there were two cuttings. One of the bushes is much smaller than the other, but in time, it will bloom, too.

I haven’t ordered clothes for the girls in a while, but when I discovered a seamstress in California who makes affordable Blythe clothes, I ordered two summer dresses. They came yesterday.

Holly graciously offered to model one of the dresses.

Isn’t it gorgeous? The fabric on the bodice is a peach polka dot, but it’s hard to see in this photo. I’m crazy about the fabric combination.

I have to say – and don’t tell anyone else – that Holly may be the most photogenic of my girls.

Ssshhhh!

In other news, the doll that is coming to me from Ukraine, recently diverted to Denver CO for some reason, is at my local post office and is expected to be delivered today. I have to sign for it. If it isn’t out with the carrier, I’ll drive over and get the package in person.

The Farmer’s Market was cancelled for today as it’s going to be dangerously hot outside.

A quick story: When I realized that Holly was about to be delivered, I finally confessed to Don that I had three dolls coming to our mailbox in the next several days. Granted, both Holly and the doll from Ukraine were inexpensive, and I’d ordered the companion doll for Wren a few months back, but I was a bit nervous about telling him.

His response: “Great! That means more joy is coming to our house!”

I don’t deserve him, but I’m eternally grateful for him.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Holly

Well, I was wrong about the Blythe from Ukraine being delivered yesterday. Turns out it was the tracking number for a piece of clothing that I ordered from another seller in Ukraine. The doll that went to Denver is still not here, but my local post office is on it. This has happened to me at least once before –  an item getting shipped  to a different city because of a mistake the USPS made. I think it has to be returned to the location where the mistake was made – in this case, Queens. It takes a few days to sort it out.

But think of this: The doll from Ukraine was customized in Kiev – in a war zone – and traveled through that war zone to the border with Poland, where it was transferred and shipped to the USA. It takes a long time, but the shipping process itself moved smoothly. Then, after all of that, some USPS worker tosses the package in the wrong bin and it ends up in Denver. I mean, come on!

But, one girl did arrive! She has had two previous owners and I had the chance to adopt her. She was customized by Rocket Dolls (Karla) who lives in Mexico. I adopted her from Dolly Escapades on IG. She couldn’t have been nicer.

Here she is. Her former mom named her Holly and I like that name. One of the hallmarks of Rocket Dolls’ style is the beautiful strong eyebrows. I’ve always loved those brows. I especially love dark brows with blond hair. (Most of my girls have very light eyebrows, the exception being Zoe.)

Check out that intense stare.

She is even more beautiful in person – I am so taken by her face.

She was dressed exactly like this when I opened the box.

She’s so pretty! There are lots of light freckles on her face.

The owner included some clothing with Holly – so generous of her – so we have some more outfits for the girls.

I think she’ll spend the day with me. I’m crazy about her.

The heat index yesterday was 102° and it will get worse over the weekend. There’s so much humidity that I have officially entered the brain fog zone.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
