The English Cottage: A Progression (So Far)

February 10, 2022 at 10:13 am by Claudia

Stayed up way too late watching Nathan Chen win the Gold Medal for Men’s Figure Skating but it was worth it!

I did a lot of grouting and aging work on the English Cottage yesterday – also known as Dove Cottage, but I never seem to call it by that name. I had come to the conclusion that the stones looked too pristine, like a new house that is trying to echo the past, but looks like an imposter. So, I got the grout and some water and some rags, as well as various tools to apply said grout – including a toothpick and a popsicle stick functioning as a spatula. It’s messy work. I had to vacuum the area around the dollhouse, as well as the floor.

I’m pleased with the results. The front of the house and one of the side walls are finished. Just one more wall to go. It’s tedious, but it pays off. When this is done, I can deal with the porch and window boxes.

It always helps to see a before and after progression:

The exterior of the house on the day I rescued it from the town dump. This is the Arthur, a Greenleaf dollhouse, and it was meant to have a porch and railings – they were missing when I adopted it. I could have recreated it, but I didn’t want that look.

The interior:

The interior on the day I brought it home. I eventually removed the interior wall and stairs. As you can see, both of those elements limited what I could do with the house. Let’s not even talk about my efforts to remove that green carpet, if you can call it that, and the tile in the kitchen. Remember the hours I spent with a hair dryer softening the badly applied glue?

Taken after priming and making the decision to cover the exterior with ‘stones.’

That little process took forever.

I primed the inside as well.

The interior now (still needs more work done.)

Wallpaper added, as well as ceiling beams, wood floors in every room, new acrylic inserts for the windows, new trim (from the backup Arthur kit that Barbara graciously sent me.) New door (from the same backup kit.) The wood beam trim in the studio was added because I screwed up the wallpaper application. I made the desk. I made the painter’s box. I refinished an unfinished armoire, as well as the island in the kitchen.

And the exterior, after grouting and aging.

I’m very happy with the results. I’m going to age the roof a bit, too. Eventually. Who knows, I may do it right away as I seem to be on a roll.

(Maybe I’m avoiding the massive amount of work that needs to be done on the Beacon Hill.)

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Busy Playing

February 9, 2022 at 9:35 am by Claudia

I actually did some work on the dollhouse.

Yes. I’m not kidding.

I applied two coats of mod podge to seal the stones. Now for grout. Frankly it makes me nervous. It could dramatically change the look of the house. So I’m going to try it on the two rows of stones at the back of the house first. The grout mix I have on hand is a dark gray. I may try to lighten it a bit – how, I’m not sure. This will be tricky.

Okay, I’m going to stop talking about it or I’ll talk myself out of it.

Breaking news: It’s sunny today!

The puzzle is coming along nicely. I dropped off the box of eggcups and they are now winging their way to Birmingham, AL. They should arrive at Country Living’s offices tomorrow. I vacuumed. I did the aforementioned work on the dollhouse.

And I dressed little Livvy in this outfit, which arrived in yesterday’s mail and took about two months to get here.

Socks, dress, and pinafore from LenaLittleDress on Instagram. (I have many of her adorable outfits.) There was another dress in the package but I have to decide who should model it.

Livvy is darned adorable. Her face is so beautifully carved (by VegaDolls) and those eyes!

Dolls, dollhouses, books, puzzles = Claudia’s favorite avenues of escape.

Yesterday was the 6th anniversary of the day we said goodbye to Scoutie. It doesn’t seem possible that it’s been 6 years, just as it doesn’t seem possible that my dad has been gone for 6 years. I lost my dad on October 29th of 2015 and Scoutie on the following February 8th. Just a little over 3 months apart.

Oh lord. The ad that just came up on the sidebar was for “Pilates for Seniors.”

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Puzzles and Egg Cups

February 8, 2022 at 9:36 am by Claudia

Dickens puzzle in progress. I spent a fair amount of time on it yesterday. It’s very engrossing, which is what I need now.

We ventured into the neighboring college town and I bought some boxes and bubble wrap and tape. Since we live in such a small house, I’ve learned not to hang on to boxes because we just don’t have the storage space. We recycle all that cardboard. I did have a bit of bubble wrap on hand, but I needed more. Then we came back to the house and I proceeded to wrap each egg cup in bubble wrap, placing sheets of it between the layers of egg cups. Country Living sent me a UPS label and today I’ll drop it off for shipping. I have to say that that the woman I’m working with couldn’t be nicer. She completely understands my worries about the egg cups in transit and during the time that CL is doing the shoot. Since this is what she does for a living, I think all will be well.

A lot of the ice on the trees and plants melted yesterday and more will melt today. But in the meantime, it’s gray and foggy out there.

We’re watching the Olympics, as we always do, and are grateful for the distraction. I’ve been a bit distracted myself by my worries about the weather and the need to package up the egg cups and send them off so they arrive in time for the shoot. Once I drop them off today, I’ll breathe a sigh of relief.

I’m gearing up to do some work on the exterior of the English Cottage. I want to seal the stones with Mod Podge and then add some mortar. The process will be messy, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot and I realize that the stones will look more realistic and aged that way. I’m excited about it.

Okay, my friends. I have to get going.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
