Day Three Hundred Sixty-Five

March 13, 2021 at 10:18 am by Claudia

A year.

There’s not much to say about the year as I’ve been talking about it every day, all year long. I’m glad we made it through. We will continue to try to handle it with grace and cheer. At times, that’s not so easy, but most of the time it is.

Knowing that we’re all being vaccinated, or will soon be vaccinated, certainly helps.

And spring being just around the corner helps, too.

Bless you all.

Spring, Easter, egg cups. Here are a few of my wee little treasures. The one on the left, third row down, was given to me by my godparents when I was a child.

They’re all dear to me, but the vintage Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set was gathered one by one over the course of several years. A true prize. There was a time when these cups went for hundreds of dollars each – I remember it, as they were still very pricey when I first started collecting egg cups. My friend Nels has the entire set and he paid much more than I did.

I still watch for them on eBay, mostly out of curiosity. Just the other day a Sneezy came up for auction.

And now that I’ve written this I will be, like clockwork, checking out the egg cups for sale on eBay. I don’t buy them all that often these days, but I do pick one up now and then. Vintage, of course. Figurals, which are my favorites and the reason I started collecting, are still out there but not in the range they once were. Some of my favorites, found when I first started collecting in 2002, are rarely seen these days.

I’ll share more of my babies over the next two weeks.

Sunny today but colder. We had very high winds all night long and they left me feeling edgy as the winds pounded the house outside our bedroom. More are due tomorrow. I wish they’d just stop – we’ve had a lot of high winds over the past year or so.

Just about to finish A Chelsea Concerto. I must say it’s been a riveting read but I’ll be glad to have a break from the Blitz. I think a mystery will be next; I need the change of pace.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Day Three Hundred Sixty-Four

March 12, 2021 at 10:01 am by Claudia

A year ago today we were grocery shopping and stocking up on supplies, something we’d done off and on all week long. I remember remarking at the amount of people who were buying bottled water and lots of toilet paper and paper towels. The week before, we had dinner at a restaurant with Doug and Rick and then, a few days later, Don and I went out to breakfast where I remember talking to a lady at the next table. She was a scientist and spoke at length to us about Wuhan, the virus, what her scientist friends were thinking about all of it, etc. I remember wondering why she chose us to speak to. I guess worry and a need to share it with someone. We were all crammed together at tables, still no masks, and the whole thing felt odd. Much of what she predicted has come true. I’d forgotten all about that until we looked at Don’s 2020 planner this morning. That was our last meal at a restaurant, something we didn’t do all that often to begin with.

Gorgeous day yesterday. Another one is on the docket for today. The last remnants of snow up in the back forty have finally melted. But this is the Northeast and I don’t kid myself about the changes in spring weather. I’ve seen it snow during the first week of May. So far, except for one day in the thirties next week, it looks as if temps will be in the forties and fifties.

Puzzle status.

This one has been very difficult. I worked on it for a large chunk of time yesterday and finally made some significant progress. I figure I have about two more puzzles in me before spring takes over and I’m outside more often.

Hopefully. I love doing the puzzles, but I love my gardens even more.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Day Three Hundred Sixty-Three

March 11, 2021 at 10:12 am by Claudia

Some thoughts this morning:

I had a little ‘discussion’ with someone on IG about a week ago. This person lives in Texas and was of the opinion that wearing or not wearing a mask should be up to the individual and that there should be no judgment involved. In other words, “To Each his Own.” You obviously know what I think about that. We politely discussed that issue and then I wished her well and ended it because how can you teach someone about caring for the welfare of others, about the greater good, about the fact that there are times when that is essential, that anything else is bordering on criminal?

That stuck with me this week as I read A Chelsea Concerto, which is all about London during the Blitz. As an American, I certainly have some knowledge of the Blitz, but let’s face it, I’m influenced by a slightly romanticized version of that horrific time, fueled by Hollywood movies and “Keep Calm and Carry On.” The reality was very different. Sometimes I have to put the book down because the enormity of loss that I’m reading about is just too intense. It seems as if everyone was involved in some capacity, volunteering for the war effort; as Air Raid Wardens, as Operators who helped to spread the specific warnings, as nurses and doctors, those who helped the enormous amount of refugees pouring into Britain cope in a new country, translators, and the list goes on and on. I’m thinking those who seem to be fine with that ‘whatever’ attitude about wearing masks during a pandemic wouldn’t have coped so well during the Blitz.

We’re also watching one of the best series we’ve ever seen, A French Village, which is all about a village that is occupied by the Nazis during the war. It’s historically accurate, as a famous and respected French historian advised the writers. The performances are excellent and the grim realities of those jockeying for power, whether German or French – those in the Vichy government who collaborated with the Germans to get along, those who were in the Resistance, local police and German police, the SS and the Gestapo, and those villagers just trying to survive – it’s all fascinating and horrific and heartbreaking and everything in between.

Two different views of that war from opposite sides of the Channel. It’s certainly consuming my thoughts lately. I cannot recommend A Chelsea Concerto  and A French Village (on Amazon Prime) highly enough. We are riveted to that series every night. Brilliant.

And now I’ll do a 180 and show you photos of two miniatures I received yesterday, from Tiny Doll House in NYC.

An umbrella for the umbrella stand.

And this teapot made by Keith Brown. The lid is removable.

Today we hit 65 degrees! Crazy, as the temps will soon drop about 20 degrees, but we’re going to enjoy it while we can and hopefully watch the last of the snow melt away.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
