Temporarily Missing Our Old Neighborhood

February 19, 2019 at 10:29 am by Claudia

Sunlight hitting our Mockingbird Hill Cottage sign in the kitchen. Almost as if there was a spotlight on it.

Feeling rather wiped out today, due, I suspect, to shoveling yesterday. Don and I had to go out and shovel the driveway because we were due for a heating oil delivery. It took every ounce of strength and my muscles are still very weak from this bug. We felt great satisfaction when we did it, but we laid low for the rest of the day, not even going to the grocery store, even though we’re out of almost everything.

Getting my strength back is my new goal.

We watched Wings of Desire  last night. Brilliant. Beautiful. Uplifting. Bravo, Wim Wenders. And Bravo to the late, great Bruno Ganz. You will be missed.

Don and I have spent an inordinate amount of time together over the past month. First he was taking care of me, then he came down with the bug, then we were taking care of each other. Long, long days where we feel like we might be slowly losing our minds – as I said in one of my comment replies yesterday, it’s a wonder we haven’t killed each other. Thank goodness we’re here together and that one of us isn’t working away from home. This would be much harder for me on my own. Much, much harder.

We’ve been reminiscing this morning about our old neighborhood in San Diego. It was called Kensington and it had a lot of craftsman homes. We could walk a couple of blocks and be on Adams Avenue, which was the main drag. It had a great movie theater and lots of great restaurants. Our favorites: DeMille’s (Italian), Ponce’s (Mexican), the Kensington Cafe (just around the corner from our house) and further down Adams in Normal Heights, Jhyoti Bihanga – a vegetarian restaurant we loved. They had the best brunches!

We love where we live, but we miss walking on sidewalks and having easy accessibility to local eateries. It was a great walking neighborhood. And, of course, about this time of year, we miss the warmth of the sun. And the beach.

Sigh.

Do you remember when I was talking about sheet music and mentioned a store I used to frequent in San Diego? I mentioned that it was very near to Balboa Park but I couldn’t remember the name. I finally found the name of the music store stamped on one of my pieces of music. McEvoy Music on Fifth Avenue. It was right by my bank. It’s closed now. Mr. McEvoy, the owner, died in 2012. I remember him. He was almost always behind the counter when I stopped by. His wife died in 2015. I imagine that is why the store is now closed. (They were married for 55 years!)

As you can tell, we’re missing San Diego a bit. Happens like clockwork every year. This year, with illness and snow and ice, we really miss it! As soon as spring arrives, however, that feeling will fade away and we’ll be very happy that we live in the Hudson Valley.

Happy Tuesday.

Monday Thoughts

February 18, 2019 at 10:23 am by Claudia

Yet more snow. And we haven’t been able to shovel the top of the driveway (the parking area) because we’ve been too sick to do it. Looks like my car will remain in place for a while.

February has been a nightmarish month and I will be glad to say goodbye to it.

I’m starting to feel better. I’m still pretty weak and I get tired easily, but I’ve been doing a few things around the house. I just have to pace myself. Still have chest congestion. But I’ve finished my antibiotics. Don is not feeling at all well. He’s about one week behind me in this process, so I’m urging him to stay in and just rest. I’m pleased to say that he did just that yesterday. All day long.

I don’t know when – if ever – I’ve been through something like this. I’m into the start of my fourth week and I’m still not entirely well.

We lost two great actors recently: Albert Finney and Bruno Ganz. You may not have heard of Bruno Ganz – he was Swiss by birth and worked primarily in German film, though he did do English language films as well. He starred in one of my favorite films, Wings of Desire,  directed by Wim Wenders. I don’t know whether you’ve ever seen it, but Ganz plays an angel, part of a group of angels who watch out for human beings. But he falls for a beautiful trapeze artist and finds he wants to be human. It’s a beautiful film; profound and moving and simply lovely. It’s on Amazon Prime, should you want to see it. Bruno Ganz gives a hauntingly beautiful performance.

Rest in Peace.

Albert Finney you know, of course. My favorite Albert Finney film is The Dresser, where he and the amazing Tom Courtenay play opposite each other – both actors brilliant and at the top of their game.

Last night, however, we were looking at viewing options on Amazon Prime and we came across a Finney movie we had never heard of, let alone seen: A Man of No Importance – made in 1994. It’s an Irish film, and filled with wonderful character actors, including the gifted Brenda Fricker and Michael Gambon.

But Finney. Oh my god.  He is simply brilliant.

I cannot get it out of my mind this morning. Neither can Don. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but it takes place in 1963 Dublin and Finney plays a bus conductor.

Watch it if you can. You’ll see an actor who is simply one of the best there ever was. Fearless, stunning, and heartbreaking – what a gift he was. What an incredible legacy he left us.

Rest in Peace.

I’m just going to say it: February has sucked. Lots of snow, lots of sickness. And every snow event has involved ice. Enough already.

I would say I’m yearning for spring, but I don’t quite have the energy for that! I know March can be a pain in the tush, but it is also that much closer to April and the beginning of green. Bring it on.

Don has fallen asleep in the living room. I can hear him snoring, bless him.

Starting my 12th year of blogging today.

Happy Monday.

From Our Outpost

February 16, 2019 at 9:44 am by Claudia

Well.

Nothing new. We’re both sick. Tomorrow will mark 3 weeks for me, and 2 weeks for Don. Whatever this is, it’s completely debilitating. I can’t remember feeling this crappy for this long. And – in my case – it also attacked my intestines early on. So there’s that. I think the antibiotic has helped – today was my last dose as it’s one of those 5-day long prescriptions, which makes it extra intense. I’m taking probiotics to counterbalance the side effects.

I’m feeling better by bits. This has left both of us feeling exhausted much of the time.

It’s hard to stay positive.

I’ve heard from a few people that they had much the same kind of thing and it lasted at least 3 weeks, if not more.

Our driveway is snow-covered as neither of us has the energy to shovel.

Don says he feels worse today. That’s the way this thing is, you feel like you might be turning a corner and then pow! You’re back where you started. I’m drinking tons of water and keeping hydrated, as is Don.

Anyway, there’s your update. I’m losing ad income because I’m not posting, but what can you do?

In spite of everything, Don managed to surprise me on Valentine’s Day:

He snuck them upstairs the day before V-Day (into the office) and I had no idea they were there. In fact, I had no idea it was Valentine’s Day. Aren’t they lovely?

Bless him.

This whole thing feels like we’ve been sent to some remote outpost where we have no idea what day it is or when we’ll feel better!

Tomorrow marks my 11th blogiversary. How can that be?

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
