A Collecting Story

August 7, 2018 at 10:13 am by Claudia

A story for you today. And you well know that everything I have here in the cottage has a story.

You know I collect egg cups. I’ve been collecting figural egg cups since 2002, not long after we moved East. In the beginning, I did what I always do, I researched. I bought the only book on the subject. I poured over photos. I bid for them on eBay. I found many wonderful figural egg cups that are very hard to find nowadays. That book mentioned a set of  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs egg cups that were made for Walt Disney Enterprises in 1937 and I was entranced by them. At the time, a full set was worth at least $1000 – $1500.

Over the course of most of the past 16 years, I had managed to acquire two of them. Only two. They don’t come up for auction that often. Then, either last year or the year before, two more came up for auction at separate times and I snagged them. I now had four of the dwarfs; Bashful, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc.

Snow White never came up for auction.

Shortly before Don was due to move back home, a Snow White in Australia came up for auction on eBay and I immediately bid on her. I was the leading bidder for several days. We moved Don back home on a Sunday. The auction was due to end the following Wednesday. We were exhausted, both physically and spiritually, and we spent those first few days just hanging around.

I was so  exhausted that I completely forgot about the end of the auction until I read my emails and found out I’d been outbid and then that I’d lost out. All because we were sitting outside and my brain was fried. I was so upset! I figured that had been my one and only chance.

Some time went by. One day, I had an idea. I follow a group page of egg cup collectors on Facebook. Perhaps if I wrote a post about losing out on Snow White, my particular holy grail, and shared that frustration with my fellow collectors, I might get a tip about where to search for Snow White?

So I wrote the post. And lo and behold, within an hour, a woman from Canada responded. She had a vast collection of egg cups that she had decided to sell and she had Snow White and five of the dwarfs. She had just discovered and joined the group.

Oh my heavens! It paid off! It’s all in the timing.

I messaged her and we exchanged email addresses and then the negotiating began. She wanted to sell them as a set, but I already had four of the dwarfs and didn’t want to duplicate them, nor pay the additional money for them. She also had no idea how much the value of the egg cups had decreased in the intervening years. So she quoted me a high price, based on what they used to go for. I told her that the Snow White I had missed out on had gone for much less than she had many years before and shared the going price for the dwarfs, based on current sales and what I had paid for my two most recent acquisitions. Much back and forth ensued, but finally, she agreed to sell me Snow White and Happy and Sneezy.

They arrived yesterday.

Oh my goodness! They’re in perfect condition.

I’m thrilled. In addition to all of this treasure, the seller is from Orillia, Ontario, the town in which my mom and grandmother were born. I love that. It made it seem meant to be.

So now I have Dopey, Bashful, and Grumpy.

And Sneezy, Doc, Happy, and Snow White.

I’m missing Sleepy. An interesting thing about Sleepy: he is found in two different designs. One of them is his own distinct look based on the Disney animation. The other is in the form of the exact same egg cup as Sneezy, the only difference being the name on the cup. Did they break the original mold and resort to recycling Sneezy’s mold? It’s very curious! Anyway, if you ever see one, let me know!

They’re going to get their own shelf. I just have to find one that is long enough and vintage enough. Right now they’re on one of the bookshelves.

The first two dwarf egg cups I collected were very pricey. During the past 10 years or so, they’ve gone down in price and I’ve benefitted. The entire set is still worth a lot of money, just not the over-the-top prices they used to go for. I know a collector who has the whole set and probably spent close to $2000 on them many years ago. He has no regrets. I wouldn’t either. These are very old and absolutely delightful – collected by egg cup collectors, as well as collectors of Disneyana. There aren’t that many of them around anymore.

Although…another Snow White just came up for auction in Australia. And her eyes are not quite so wonky. Hmmm…

I kept watching the UPS tracking for the package and was so frustrated when another day in customs kept it from being delivered last Friday! I had to get through an entire weekend before they would be delivered. But now they’re here and all is forgiven.

Happy Tuesday.

Frogs, Moths, Flowers, Mowing and Zelig

August 6, 2018 at 9:37 am by Claudia

I won’t tell you exactly how much I mowed yesterday. But it was a lot. I knew rain was supposed to come on Tuesday and I also knew how hot and humid the rest of Sunday would be. (Heat Warnings – also for today and tomorrow.) Don was off scouting locations for his polaroid photography, so he wasn’t here to yell at me to “Come in!”

It’s been so wet from all the rain, but even more, it’s so humid that the grass never gets dry. That means the lawnmower gets clogged with wet grass, which means I have to stop and clear it out approximately 1000 times, so the process was longer than expected. I also took several breaks. But I started early.

Then I weed whacked.

I know. Maybe too much, but a big part of me is happy that I can do all of that in hot and humid weather, that I can push mow most of the property in one session, that I can outwork my neighbor, who is 20 years younger than me, has far less lawn, and is on his rider lawnmower while I’m walking and pushing and getting it done.

Strong women unite!

This adorable little guy was hopping away from the path of the lawnmower. Of course, I stopped to make sure he was safe and took a picture of him.

Flowers:

As if lit by a spotlight.

Don was scouting a location nearby, which is an old railway trestle bridge that spans the Hudson. It’s called The Walkway Over the Hudson. (I shared a walk we took there on the blog a couple of years ago.) Anyway, while he was there, the camera attracted all sorts of attention as it always does and he ended up speaking to, and taking a picture of, a young couple visiting our neck of the woods from London. Questions about the camera ensued and Don told them he was studying with a guy and that they should google his name – Louis Mendes.

They responded with “Oh, we know him! We just met him the other day at the train station!”

What are the odds that this young couple would be visiting and have already met Louis?

I told Don that Louis is the “Zelig” of modern day Manhattan.

Don’s going into the city today to have a session with Louis. I was going to go with him but I do not cope well with this heat, and the thought of being in the city and trying to avoid it is not pleasant. And I don’t have to be there for anything specific. So I’m staying here, running some errands, and waiting for a package to be delivered. I’ll share the contents with you tomorrow.

Happy Monday.

Good for the Soul

August 5, 2018 at 9:53 am by Claudia

It was foggy this morning and I love a foggy morning. It was also not raining. I opened the front door and could hear birdsong. It wasn’t the sound of many, many birds like one hears in the spring, but one or two birds with the most glorious calls. I went outside, sat on the glider and just listened. The calls were loud and very musical and, since it was foggy, the cicadas hadn’t started up yet, so I could simply sit and listen.

Eventually, I went inside for my camera because it was so beautiful out there that I couldn’t resist.

I felt calmer and more at peace than I have in a while. It’s amazing and wondrous what fog and birdsong and the beauty of the landscape can do for one’s soul.

The light just beginning to hit the maple tree.

Pokeweed, which has self-seeded in front of the house. I don’t want it there next year, but I couldn’t pull it now. The birds love those berries.

I heard the honking of Canada Geese and got this picture of them flying through the fog.

I saw a little bird fly onto a maple branch so I got up and moved closer. He, too, was singing a beautiful song, a song that seemed too powerful to come from that little body.

I managed to get this photo:

I love seeing that tiny bird in the midst of all the leaves and the lichen-covered branches, with the fog in the background. I was real happy with this shot.

A good way to start the day. To add to that, we were able to sit in the secret garden and have our second cup of coffee. We haven’t been able to do that for a while. Eventually, we had to come in as the mosquitoes are plentiful this year due to all the rain.

Today, I must mow. It’s supposed to get very, very hot this afternoon, so I’ll have to get to it this morning. And tomorrow morning. Because it’s going to rain  again on Tuesday. Remember me saying that the rivers were alarmingly low? They’re full to the brim now. We can hear the rush of water from our front porch.

That’s a good thing.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
