Portraits

August 23, 2016 at 10:17 am by Claudia

Simply this:

8-23 Rileywatercolor

When this arrived in the mail yesterday, we were both home. We stood together, opened the box, pulled this out, and gasped. Then I cried. Then we found ourselves touching it, almost as if we could pet Riley and have him come back to life. We miss him so.

Isn’t this incredible? Shanna has captured the beauty of our boy. Those ears that I loved to stroke. His beautiful coloring. And his incredibly soft and gentle brown eyes. I could lose myself in those eyes and often did.

Did you notice the bit of butterfly bush and the Eastern Swallowtail butterfly in the upper left hand corner? Heavenly.

We may not have human children, but we are  parents. We were/are the mother and father of our three beloved dogs and there’s not a day that goes by where we don’t mourn their loss. Riley, who was rescued from the streets of Paterson, NJ. Who had never had any love or socialization. Who was difficult and scared for a long time but so worth it. Who had heartworm, but survived when we caught it in time. Scoutie, who was rescued from the desert in California, with a tail that had been docked for some reason. Lively and loving from the moment we met her. Winston, who had been given up by his family because of allergies and who was scared and bewildered when we found him at the Humane Society in San Diego. Who was our first child.

As I sit here at my desk and write about them, I find myself crying once again. Rescuing – for us – is the only way to go. Giving a home and a second chance to a dog is rewarding beyond measure.

Shanna has been most generous in these gifts, these treasured portraits of our babies. But now I’m going to pay her: I’ve commissioned a portrait of our boy Winston, because even though we lost him about 14 years ago, before my blogging days and a fancy camera, I think I can find enough photos of him for Shanna to create his portrait, as well. Riley and Scout lived fairly long lives; Winston was taken from us at the age of eight, when we discovered he had a tumor on his heart. He was gone far too soon and I fell into a depression after we lost him. We had Scout, thank goodness, but oh how I mourned him. And I didn’t yet have the outlet of a blog where I could write about him.

All of these portraits will be on our living room wall.

I’m not sure where I will put this photograph, but I just had it enlarged. It used to be the wallpaper on my phone:

I’m off to Michael’s today to buy some frames.

Shanna, I can never, never thank you enough. I dreamed of finding someone to paint our children, and you were the answer to my prayer. Bless you.

Happy Tuesday.

Book Review: The Girls in the Garden by Lisa Jewell

Today I am reviewing The Girls in the Garden by Lisa Jewell for TLC Book Tours. As always, I am provided with a copy of the book in return for my honest review.

About the book (from the publisher): Imagine that you live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other people’s houses. You’ve known your neighbors for years and you trust them implicitly. You think your children are safe. But are they really?

One midsummer night, as a festive neighborhood party is taking place, preteen Pip discovers her thirteen-year-old sister, Grace, lying unconscious and bloody in a hidden corner of a lush rose garden. What really happened to her? And who is responsible?

Dark secrets, a devastating mystery, and the games both children and adults play all swirl together in this gripping love, packed with utterly believable characters and page-turning suspense.

My review: I’ve not read any of Lisa Jewell’s books before, though she is a bestselling author of thirteen novels. One of the many reasons I love reviewing books is that I am introduced to authors I might not know of otherwise. Such is Lisa Jewell.

The novel centers on the lives of the occupants of the houses and apartments that border the communal garden: Adele and Leo and their three daughters who are living in a huge flat along with Leo’s father – a temporary resident; Clare and her two daughters, who have sought refuge in a flat after losing their house (I won’t tell you how, you will discover that soon enough); and the children that roam the garden in packs, making the garden their refuge, their place to hang out.

Yes, it’s a mystery; after all, when Pip discovers her sister’s unconscious body there is a natural need to know who was responsible for injuring her. Since Grace is unconscious, it falls to Clare, to Adele, and to Pip to find out the truth. But more importantly, this novel is a rich character study. Jewell creates complex and very real characters. She understands kids who are on the precipice of their teenage years and the way they think. She also understands adults and the way they think; the complexities of raising children, the complexity of simply being an adult. Much of the story is told from three points-of-view: Adele’s, Clare’s and Pip’s.

The novel starts with the discovery of Grace’s body, then backs up to an earlier time when Clare has just moved into the neighborhood. We learn the back story of all the characters, how their lives intertwine, how they interact, and how the appearance of Pip and Grace on the scene changes everything.

Think Rear Window, where there is a slice of life that can be seen only by those inhabitants who look out on the interior courtyard.

Beautifully written, the novel explores relationships and the assumptions we hold about those we think we know and love. When Grace is injured, everything changes. What secrets might be uncovered – secrets about those we love, about what we hold dear?

This is a lovely novel, written with a compassionate heart. You’ll find it compelling and, ultimately, life-affirming.

In the Mail

August 21, 2016 at 10:25 am by Claudia

Red and I have problems. I love  red, but photographing it is always problematical. Whether it’s a red rose or a red sofa (as you will soon see) I can never quite get the tint/shade right.

I got a package in the mail yesterday – all the way from Australia. Gabrielle, who made the sofa for Don’s mini studio, made another one in red. For me, not Don. It’s a deeper red, but heck if I can get it to register, no matter how much I tweak it on Lightroom.

So just know that the sofa has less of an orange tint and more of a deep cherry tint.

Not quite right. But enough of that. Isn’t it beautiful?

Here it is in the loft. It might be a bit too long for this house, but I’m currently saving up for another house, so it may move around. Trying to photograph the loft yesterday was equally frustrating. Maybe I’ve lost my mini photography mojo? It needs some pillows, so I just might have to trot over to Brae’s Etsy shop.

Also in the mail on Friday: some wallpaper for the newest project, the half-scale Fairfield.

8-21 wallpaper

These are William Morris prints in half-scale, along with a tile I might be using (lower right hand corner.) ItsyBitsyMini, where I get all my mini wallpaper, has most of their designs available in half-scale and quarter-scale as well as 1:12 scale. And their customer service is great. These arrived with a slight crease/wrinkle, which limits what I can do with them. ItsyBitsyMini promptly responded and is sending new sheets next week. Thank you!

And to top off my ‘packages in the mail,’ a big, heavy box arrived yesterday. I wasn’t expecting anything other than the sofa so I was, to put it mildly, quite curious! It was from my friend Donna and her daughter Amanda – Amanda designed the Bedrooms coloring book, remember?

Inside was a thank you card and a gift for hosting the giveaway. It was my pleasure to host it, since I’ve known Donna for such a long time. And Amanda sent me my own copy of the coloring book, so I was quite happy.

Here is what I unwrapped:

8-21 shakespeareboxset2

A vintage set of Shakespeare, illustrated and in three volumes, and edited by well-known Shakespearean scholar, A. L. Rowse. Oh, my heavens!

8-21 shakespeareboxset

It’s beautifully illustrated and includes photographs from various productions. I never see this set in any shop or used bookstore. But Donna and Amanda have serious junking/thrifting skills (Donna has an Etsy shop) and somehow she found this.

Thank you, dear Donna and Amanda. I’m thrilled to have this in my library and will treasure it always.

Two brief-ish book reviews on Just Let Me Finish This Page today. Stop by!

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
