• Mowing and mowing and mowing. Since we were both so busy last week and it rained several times, the lawn needed attention. We still have to do the back forty, but it’s looking better out there. Now, for the inside of the house!
• The sunflowers that I planted from seed have bloomed. The flowers themselves are moderate in size, but I love this color. There should be at least one more blossom, however, we’re missing one because the deer ate it (I saw it happening.)
• Speaking of deer, I noticed this yesterday afternoon:
All along the fence, there are stubs where there should be leaves. I’m pretty sure it’s the same deer who likes to jump into the corral and eat whatever is growing on the other side. The morning glories look dreadful now, thank you very much. It hasn’t bloomed yet, but will it now? Last year was a bust with many of the morning glories and I’m not sure why. Fingers crossed.
• As I was sitting in the lobby of the theater in Las Vegas, I saw a big advertisement for their upcoming season. This brought a double-take:
Three things:
The young actors have been cast to look exactly like the actors in the original Broadway cast. Same picture, same hair, same, same.
It now says Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville. Hmmm. That wasn’t there before.
It’s a non-union tour. It’s a non-union tour. It’s a non-union tour. It’s a non-union tour.
Let’s make that four things: You get what you pay for.
• Moving on – today is the publication day for Louise Penny’s newest, A Better Man. Yours truly will be trotting off to the bookstore later today. It’s my little tradition. I buy her newest book the day it comes out.
Happy Tuesday.

At first when word came the show was closing I felt bad for JB losing $$ on it, but no longer! You reap what you sew. Glad you are home safe.
Claudia says
Exactly! Thanks, Dottie.
Betsy says
Once deer discover morning glories, they eat them like M& Ms ! :(
I just purchased “The Better Man”. Looks like a good one.
Enjoy the beautiful day!

In the 10 years or so that I’ve been planting morning glories, this is the first time they’ve been eaten. I’m thinking it depends on the particular deer – we have one this year who has taken a liking to the little garden by the chicken wire fence.
Betsy says
I feel your pain! Gardening in the wild is a a challenge. Last year, chipmunks took one bite out of every vegetable I planted. So this year I only planted annuals in the vegetable plot and a woodchuck has been systematically snipping off each flower as soon as it’s in bloom.
I use Bobbex spray for deer but it stinks for about 30 minutes, you have to reapply after rain, I ran out and forgot to get more so now a family of deer have joined the woodchuck eating flowers and have eaten all my hostas, the ivy on the rock walls, the roses and more.
I know from experience that when they are eating in the garden at this time of year, they will return during the winter to pillage whatever is green under the snow. Going to hardware store today to get deer repellant.
Good luck!
Claudia says
Oh, what a challenge gardening is! I’m going to make some of the natural deer repellent I use and spray the morning glories. I held off until today because it rained yesterday. Hang in there, Betsy!
Donnamae says
I don’t ever think I have ever seen a sun flower that color…it’s gorgeous. Sorry to hear about your morning glories…I have a love/hate relationship with deer.
I always save the latest Louise Penny for my Christmas list. It becomes my winter read. So…will that move to the top of the pile? Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
No, I’ll read some other books first. I like to delay gratification on the newest Penny.
jeanie says
Can’t wait to read it! I’m getting it too — but not today. That has to wait till the retirement check comes in!
I’m still irritated about the non-union Margaritaville…
Claudia says
As am I, Jeanie, as am I.

Yet another reason to vote Dem next year [and always] – Dems care about unions! It’s one of the major factors that created the middle class. Former middle class, these days. OK now, I’m not gonna get started. Carry on with your mowing – enjoy as much as possibble [hey, it’s exercise, right?]. Peace.

Well, yes, Dems care about unions, but that has no effect on whether a show decides on a non-union tour or a union tour. Unfortunately. There is some shame in running a non-union tour and many directors and designers will not work on one. I’ll be curious to see if the original director is working on the tour. I somehow doubt it.
Janet in Rochester says
They choose non-union to go cheap, right?
Claudia says
Absolutely. They don’t have to pay union wages, they don’t have to pay for health insurance, they don’t have to hold to Actor’s Equity’s rules for the amount of rehearsal time, breaks during the day, all of that. They don’t have to hire a stage manager that is a member of the union. But mostly, they can pay the actors a lot less because they’re relatively inexperienced and they haven’t done enough professional work to qualify for the union. Every actor wants to get their union card. These guys haven’t. So that’s the level of ‘quality’ audiences will be getting.
It’s a cheap move, especially for a First National Tour. Sometimes shows, after having had a two or three tours, will go non-union for later tours. But very rarely does a show make that choice with their first tour.
My respect for those involved in this decision is next to nothing. And I wonder what the writers of the book of the show think about “Jimmy Buffett’s” Escape to Margaritaville??
Janet in Rochester says
Wow. Thanks for the details. I can just imagine how teed off the original cast & crew must feel. I’M teed off – & I wasn’t even involved!!!
kathy in iowa says
agree!

Claudia says
I don’t know whether they’re teed off – most of them have other work now. But as members of the union, I’m sure they are disappointed in the decision of Jimmy and the producers.
Michelle Alcock says
Thank you for clarifying non-union vs union. I didn’t understand the ramifications for both the audience and the actors.
Claudia says
You’re welcome, Michelle.
Judy says
Been reading the new Louise Penny all morning on my kindle. You’ll like it!
Claudia says
Oh, I know I will!
Wendy T says
Haven’t causght up with Penny so can’t read the latest yet… :( enjoy it for me!
Claudia says
I will, Wendy!
Marilyn says
I mowed the front lawn yesterday and did a little cleaning up in the back. Also planted some potted flowers to hopefully bloom next year. Have fun at the bookstore and enjoy your book.
Marilyn
Claudia says
Thank you, Marilyn. I just ran in and out of the bookstore – got the book – and then went right back home.
kathy in iowa says
jimmy’s music makes me happy. attempts at manipulation and putting money over quality does not.
never seen that color on a sunflower … beautiful!
hope by now you’ve picked up the new louise penny book and are enjoying it.
i should go for a walk while it’s sunny … and plan to in a bit. for now am going to knit a while … am having fun embellishing a simple hat pattern with different stitches, colors, etc. and testing a new idea.
happy tuesday!

We had a lovely day today – beautiful weather. Cool mornings have been the norm since I got home. Autumn is on the way.
Eve says
In my yard, it’s Hostas the dear deer go after. They are deer salad, down to the nubs and up by the roots. It limits my planting due to too much shade and too many deer. Another reason I ogle your garden photos.
Claudia says
This year, they have completely ignored the hostas – and I have a lot of them.
