Houses on the Lake, New Favorites & A Birthday Wish

Before I get going here, a Very Happy Birthday to my beloved sister, Meredith! She and her family are on their way to a wedding, so I don’t know if I’ll get to talk to her directly, but let me assure you, she is the best sister, as well as a wonderful mom and wife, aunt, daughter and all-around incredible human being. I love you, Mer.

It was beautiful yesterday. No rain. I know – shocking! On a break from rehearsal, I grabbed my camera and walked around the grounds.

I discovered some cottages on a little hill surrounded by trees – just down the street from the theater.

Then I walked along the lake. There are lots of charming cottages here, but there are also larger homes that are on the lakefront. Here goes.

Talk about making a statement! I love this house. Incredible detail everywhere. According to the Artistic Director, it was fully restored a few years back.

Do you remember this house from a few posts back? I thought it was pink, but it’s really a salmon color. I decided we needed a close-up.

Another new favorite. Feast your eyes on the detail, from the tip of the roof on down. The upper porch is screened-in. I can’t decide what I love most, but that cut-out detail that swoops and curves between the porch posts makes my heart sing.

I simply cannot stand it, it’s so beautiful. Many people name their cottages here in Chautauqua, so this cottage might already have a name, but I’ve dubbed it Salmon Cottage, nonetheless.

Chautauqua is beautiful. And as often as I’ve taken walks on the grounds, I’m always discovering something new, like Gingerbread Cottage.

More Cottages (Including My Favorite)

Don loved all your birthday messages! I don’t know if you saw it, but he left a comment on the post thanking all of you. (By the way, Don and Little Z, our nephew, share the same birthday.) Gosh, it was hard being apart on his birthday! I had a major case of the homesick blues that carried over into yesterday. But today is sunny, I have the morning off, then it’s our first run-through of the play which will be exciting. We move onstage on Monday.

Two porches, a farmhouse look, board and batten – and wonderful colors of paint on the window and door trim

A bigger cottage with shingles that remind me of those on cottages along the Atlantic Ocean. Love the purple and lime green paint combination.

This cottage is right down by the lake. I understand why they chose bigger windows on the first floor with the view they’ve got, but I don’t think they work. The top half looks like it belongs to one house and the bottom looks like it belongs to an entirely different house. But I love the railing on the second floor and the trim underneath it.

Sigh. So charming with deep porches and simple gingerbread details. White wicker furniture and a fan for those sultry days near the lake.

This is heavily canopied by trees, so it was a bit difficult to get a good picture. Great gingerbread detail along the roof line, fabulous screen door, and a neat color combination of gray and pink.

Are you ready for my favorite cottage in Chautauqua? It’s been the winner for two years in a row. This one has a huge tree in front of it, so I have to take a photo of it at an angle.

Oh my goodness.

What’s not to love about this cottage (that should be mine)?

First of all – pale pink. White trim. (I might add that this pink is almost the same shade of pink that I use on Just Let Me Finish This Page. Again – it should be mine.)

Absolutely amazing detail on the porch railings. Gingerbread detail on the cornices. Board and batten. A splendid screen door.

And then your eye travels up to the roof line and there is even more wonderful detail. This cottage is my dream cottage.

It’s quite deep, by the way. You can’t tell from this photo but the cottage extends far back into the lot.

Wouldn’t this make the perfect dollhouse?

You’d better believe I’m thinking about it….it might be time for another dollhouse.

Cottage Details

We rehearsed until 10 pm last night, so I’m a bit off today. The students often have classes scheduled in the mornings, so rehearsals can’t start until the afternoon. Since I tend to wake up early, I’m fading by about 8 pm! Luckily, I slept in a bit today.

The details on these cottages never fail to enchant me. This one has a porch that is high off the ground and another porch on the second level (a common occurrence in Chautauqua). The siding is board and batten. The detail around the two roof peaks is absolutely charming – and the diamond-shaped windows! Don’t you just want to sit on this porch and while away the hours?

And then there’s detail like this – subtle, but charming.

There are grand houses around here and I will share some photos of them with you over the next two weeks, but my favorites are the modestly sized cottages – many of them Carpenter Gothic in style. I’ve noticed that many homeowners have named their cottages. This one is The Buckeye, which makes me think these homeowners hail from Ohio.

Many of them have a vase of flowers adorning a table on the porch – beautifully arranged, cottage in style. Hanging ferns, planter boxes, painted furniture in a lovely shade of blue, flag waving…perfect.

I have two favorite houses here. This one is my second favorite. That’s a yellow chair on the porch, which seems to be a perfect choice for an all-white house.

The railing…oh my heavens! I love everything about this house. The details are incredible. I’ll try to get a full-on shot later this week.

I have one absolute favorite that I’ll share with you later in the week.

A heads up: Someone who is dear to my heart in every way is having a birthday tomorrow, and for the second year in a row, I’m working out of town and can’t be there with him. So, will you help me out and stop by tomorrow to wish the guy I live with a Happy Birthday? See you then.
