Flowers & Feminism

September 29, 2016 at 9:38 am by Claudia

The zinnias are still blooming. The morning glories are still blooming. One of my rose bushes is still blooming. And the moonflowers are getting ready to bloom again. Every evening I go outside to see if a flower has opened, and if it hasn’t I check again when I first get up. Not yet. But they’re coming.

And there are leaves everywhere. The maples are dropping leaves like crazy. We haven’t begun the raking process, because why bother? There will be more leaves on the ground almost immediately. We’ll wait a bit.

Far from my favorite thing to do.

Yesterday was a tough one; mourning for my dad on his birthday, sinus problems, not enough sleep. But I tackled bill paying and that sort of thing and we finished watching the entire Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries series. We absolutely loved it. Excellent direction, design, acting – everything was pitch perfect.

I feel a post coming on about sexism – subtle and not-so-subtle – in this election. I’ve been focusing on the words that (mostly) male interviewers and pundits use when evaluating or discussing the female candidate for President. It’s really eye opening. Even pundits who I generally agree with and respect often fall prey to it. I don’t even know if they are consciously aware of it. Probably not. But it’s there.

Whatever your political views, being the first female candidate for President of the United States requires an extremely high level of bravery and steely fortitude in the face of the rampant sexism that lurks everywhere. Some of it is overt – but much of it is ingrained in our population. And it’s not limited to men.

Don and I have talked about it quite a bit.

I will say this. I am a proud feminist. My husband is a feminist. And when I see some millennials disparage or discount feminism, I want to shake them. If they don’t see the need for feminism (which frankly, boggles my mind because there is still such a glaring disparity in terms of pay and rights for women), but if they don’t  see that disparity in their lives as working women – wonderful. They can thank the feminists who came before them for that. And they’d better hope that a forward-thinking candidate is elected President because those gains could disappear all too quickly.

I once read a post by a blogger that infuriated me. She wrote that she didn’t think “Christian” women should be feminists. This was from someone who had gone to medical school and become a doctor. She was no longer practicing medicine, but no matter. The very fact that she was able to attend medical school came about because of the tireless work of feminists (both men and women) who knocked and knocked and knocked until those doors were finally opened. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

That the male candidate for President constantly talks about women in sexist terms is not open for debate. But I see it in others, as well.

There’s nothing like an election in which a woman could actually become the President to show us that a lot of work still needs to be done.

Hey, I guess I wrote a mini-post about it. More, I think, will come later.

Happy Thursday.

Moonflowers, Miniatures and My Dad

September 28, 2016 at 8:32 am by Claudia

Our local guy who takes care of our oil burner and our plumbing stopped by yesterday to look at our well pump, which has been coming on when we use water (that’s normal) and then continuing to stay on for an hour (that’s not normal). He tweaked some settings and it’s better now, but eventually, we’ll have to replace it.

And by the way, the water table in our neck of the woods is low. It’s been very dry around here and last winter was virtually devoid of snow. If you have a well, that is not happy news. We have four days of rain coming up, but what we really need – and I can’t believe I’m saying this – is lots of snow this winter. Suddenly I’m cheering for snow.

Anyway, while I was going up and down the outside stairs to the basement, I noticed something. As I ventured closer to the moonflower vine, I saw this:

What the heck? A moonflower had opened overnight! This flower had been torn by the rain that was falling overnight, but look! I’m thrilled. The scent is wonderful. I had been watching this vine like a hawk, and had convinced myself that I wouldn’t see any moonflowers this year.

On closer examination:

Hello!

There’s more, including a few tiny buds that I didn’t photograph.

So last night, I kept going outside during commercial breaks to see if a flower had opened.

No, not yet. Maybe tonight?

My Squint Box arrived yesterday. This month’s theme is Petite Boîte – Little Box.

A decoupaged wood serving tray, a bouquet of roses, a cheeseburger and fries, a caramel apple, a lovely enamel water pitcher, and a signed and numbered print by miniaturist Mad Missy. Let me show you the print more clearly:

I really love it and think it would work perfectly in a contemporary room setting.

Today is my dad’s birthday. He would have been 93. It’s the first birthday where I can’t call him on the phone to wish him a Happy Birthday. And next month is the first anniversary of his death.

Missing him. Happy Birthday, Dad.

Happy Wednesday.

Bad Dreams & Aging Flowers

September 23, 2016 at 8:43 am by Claudia

I had the most terrifying dream right before I woke up this morning. Absolutely horrifying. And I still can’t shake it off. I’m not prone to bad dreams – they happen rarely – but this one, this one was so vivid, so real, that I felt like I had to pull myself out of the depths of the dream to some sort of consciousness, and even then, I was half-in, half-out of it. Horrible.

This may be a three cups of coffee day.

Three balloon flowers opened the other day. This is such a sweet plant.

I know I’ve been posting less often on my book blog, Just Let Me Finish This Page, but I’d sure appreciate your stopping by when I let you know that a new review is up. During the past year, with the death of my father and Scout, I simply couldn’t attend to both blogs as diligently as I would have liked to. Since MHC is the one I write every day, the book blog suffered. I’m doing my best to post more often and I hope you still find it relevant. I used to get more comments on that blog, which leads me to believe less and less of you are reading it and that saddens me. Ah, well.

I posted a review this week that you can find here.

9-23-agingzinnia1

I post a lot of photos of pretty flowers, but I find aging flowers equally beautiful and I’m going to take more photos of them. This pink zinnia was one of the first zinnias to bloom this summer and it’s still hanging in there, less than perfect, but beautifully dignified.

9-23-agingzinnia2

This red beauty has a couple of shriveled petals, but the rest of the zinnia is gorgeous. At least, to me.

I’m going to make another cup of coffee and try to shake off that dream. Oh, it’s a strange time. Good things on the horizon in terms of my professional work, my dad’s birthday next week, the anniversary of Dad’s death next month, and the change from summer to fall. Not to mention the election. Good and unsettling, at the same time. (The dream had nothing to do with my dad, by the way.)

Feeling melancholy on this Friday.

A big thank you to those readers who have donated toward our GoFundMe campaign for our friend. You didn’t have to – you don’t even know her – and I find that incredibly moving and life-affirming. Bless you.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
