Hello!

September 14, 2016 at 9:30 am by Claudia

Long time, no see! Well, truthfully, I’ve been here, but I haven’t been able to blog as I usually do. First a book review and then a sponsored post. But, like the proverbial bad penny, I’m back!

About that book review, today is the last day to leave a comment. I pick a winner this evening. Just scroll down two posts – it’s worth it. I really loved this one.

Oh friends, I’m in the middle of morning glory nirvana. Monday: 9 blooms. Tuesday: 16 blooms. Today: 16 blooms. This particular batch of seeds has been stellar – a bumper crop of morning glories. May I share some photos with you?

I love all the stages of a morning glory.

9-14-thismorning

This was my view this morning. In the early hours of the day, they’re almost purple. As the day goes on, they morph into that beautiful Heavenly Blue color.

Goodness, it’s a lovely way to start the day.

On the porch, everything is still going strong. All the hanging plants are full and lush. And on the bench, six different pots of impatiens have come together to form this:

A giant mass of beautiful blooms.

The miniature rose plant that Don gave me on Mother’s Day is still blooming:

All in all, a very satisfying scenario here at the cottage, even though many plants in the garden beds are now fading. We’ve had gorgeous weather, although today is supposed to be humid and very warm. But it’s only for a day. The light is turning into that golden light that Fall seems to do so well.

I’m back to trail walking, after some rain and hot temps and computer issues (and three round trips to Danbury, CT) kept me off the trail for a few days. Yesterday, I mowed, which was the equivalent in miles of a trail walk. In effort? A whole lot more.

And the new computer? Lighter-weight than my older one. The retina display is incredible. Everything is so crystal clear, it’s really amazing. It’s also much faster. I guess you can say it’s been a high tech month here at the Hill/Sparks house. Don got an upgraded iPhone, I got an iPad (though I find I don’t use it all that much) and we both got new computers. Let me assure you, this is it for a long time! We’re grateful and all of it – except maybe the iPad – was desperately needed.

What else? I’m reading Martha’s Vineyard – Isle of Dreams  by Susan Branch and am thoroughly enjoying it. I’m about to put Little Z’s dollhouse from IKEA together and I’m searching for some sturdy, basic furniture for it. (He’s only five, after all.) Hopefully, we are going to head back down to Florida next month for a visit, because, as of December I am booked through May. We need to spend some time with family and walk on the beach and watch Little Z in the pool and hug my furry nephew Max. My other nephews will be away at school.

The morning glories gave us an unexpected extra:

Incredibly intricate.

Oh, and birds! I saw a robin – just one – about a week ago. A catbird was taking a bath the other day. The doves are all still here, as are the finches. This morning I could see that a bird had recently been in the birdbath, getting a good splash of water. So, many of them are still around. That makes me happy.

Happy Wednesday.

Potpourri on Saturday

September 10, 2016 at 9:44 am by Claudia

• I woke up too early. When I came downstairs, it was still darkish. In the shadows, I thought I glimpsed something…when it got even lighter, I saw this:

9-10-three

Three morning glories!

9-10-mgraindrops

It’s raining a bit out there – we still need a whole heck of a lot more – and I grabbed the chance to capture the blooms with rain drops on them.

• I’ve been deleting photos from my photo library on this laptop for days now. I have to be ruthless about it. Before I transfer everything to the new computer, I want to clear the decks, as it were. I’ve deleted old downloads, no-longer-needed documents, bookmarks in various browsers. I take a lot of photos for my blog but what I am not good about is immediately deleting the ones I download but realize I can’t use. So I get a lot of duplicates, or photos of things that seemed important at the time, but are no longer relevant.

I keep every photo ever taken of the dogs. I won’t delete any. Last night, I saw so many photos of Scout as I scrolled through my library, that when I walked downstairs for dinner, I actually looked for her in the living room. I was expecting to see her. Oh, my girl.

• We are now watching Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries on Netflix and we’re really enjoying them. The first episode was a little less than exciting, but we now realize they were just finding their way and establishing who Miss Fisher is, etc. I’m glad we stuck with it because it’s very good, indeed.

• We spent part of the afternoon yesterday setting up Don’s new laptop. He’s so excited! You have no idea how bad the other one was. The circa 2008 colors were faded, it was terribly slow, and a while back, the connector for the ear buds broke off inside the laptop. Don took it to the Apple Store to see if they could fix it, but they couldn’t. So he had no sound. None. He listened to things on his phone, which is fine, but sometimes you need a bigger screen. He spent time yesterday watching things on YouTube and listening to his CD on the laptop (“It’s really good!” he said.)

I took a picture just now of Don with the laptop, but his morning hair is sticking up all over the place and I know he wouldn’t be pleased with it, so I’ll just show you his shiny, new MacBook Pro.

• Today may be all about the computer changeover. And reading the book I am to review on Monday. A heads up for you: I have a book review that has long been scheduled for Monday, and I just found out that a sponsored post I’ve done for BlogHer was okayed for Monday. Can’t have two posts on the same day, so the sponsored post will be up on Tuesday.

Happy Saturday.

Surprises

September 9, 2016 at 10:07 am by Claudia

Erratic sleep night. This happened because I was rather wired after staying up later than usual tending to some potential blog problems which turned out to be non-problems. But all of that kept me in front of the computer screen right before I went to bed, which was and is a no-no. I did  finally sleep, so I’m hanging in there.

So, imagine my surprised delight when I stumbled down the stairs on my way to make coffee and glanced out the window of the kitchen door and saw this:

9-9-whatisaw

Whoo hoo! I finished filling the kettle, set it on the stove, grabbed my camera and was out the door in a flash. Or what stands in for a flash when you’re barely awake.

9-9-firstmorningglory

Oh, lordy, I love morning glories! Isn’t she a beauty?

And, not to be outdone, other plants in the Memorial Garden were calling for my attention:

9-9-rose

The roses are blooming again.

9-9-anotherrose

Starting the day with a smile on my face is the perfect prescription for a restless night.

Goodness it’s hot here! Yesterday it ‘felt like’ 100 degrees. Today, more of the same. I was out running errands. Don, poor guy, was in Manhattan  for several hours. When he got home, he headed straight for the shower. And yes! I cooked dinner for him! (You can pat me on the back now.)

Actually, I had a surprise up my sleeve yesterday. Don, being the most generous guy I have ever known, has always sacrificed for me; he always thinks of me first. When I needed my first laptop in 2008, he said I should use some money he had just earned to get it. When I needed another one in 2012, you guessed it, he insisted I use our money to get one, saying things like “You absolutely need it for your blog.” “This is your work, of course you must get one.”

And he took my old laptop, a white Macbook circa 2008, which in the land of tech, is positively ancient. It still has all my crap on it, plus some of his and it doesn’t work well. But he insists he can get by. He also drives our old 2001 Honda; insists on it, actually. (We just had some work done on it and it passed the annual inspection! Huzzah!)

He takes the used, giving me the new.

Recently, I’ve been having a few problems with my laptop (Do you see a pattern here? Every four years.) and I had discussed getting a new MacBook Pro with a 15 inch screen instead of the 13 inch screen I have now, which would make blogging much easier. Don’s response: “You should do it. I’ll take your old one – see if you can get it fixed and I’ll  use it.”

But, why should my dear one use something that is fast getting past its prime? That I have used every day for years? Why should he always get ‘used’ – and in this case, really used? So, after much thought, I used the opportunity presented when he was away for the day and went to the Apple Store in Connecticut. With some of my inheritance, I bought him a new Macbook Pro. I came home and was riding high, so excited to surprise him with it! I wrapped it in the only paper we had, Paw Patrol wrapping paper, and wrote a message on a card and plopped it on the coffee table in front of his chair.

He deserves better, you see, and we rarely have the money to do that, but this time I did have some money and I wanted to do something for my sweetheart. After “What’s this? It’s not my birthday…why do you have a present for me?” he opened the card, got pretty emotional, then opened the box.

And he was stunned. He couldn’t believe it! He is so excited, which tells me that all his “I’m fine with a used laptop, I don’t really need it, I can get by” comments were just Don being Don, sacrificing his needs for the ones he deemed more urgent at the time – mine. I love that about him, of course, and I’ve done my share of it, too – that’s what happens in a partnership.

But, oh, what a joy to do this for him!. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me.

Now you see why I was wired, and why all the blog stuff, coupled with the surprise, kept me up late. It was hard to calm down!

One more picture:

9-9-mg

A glorious morning, morning glory!

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
