Potpourri on Saturday

December 21, 2019 at 10:39 am by Claudia

• Still frigid here. Between the massive amount of snow we got on December 1-2, the snowfalls that have turned into sleet and ice, and the now frigid weather, we feel like we’ve been through a long winter already, yet winter doesn’t even start until today! It’s surreal. Tomorrow is the day we’re looking forward to. 45 degrees. The ice that has been here all week will finally  start to melt. The good news is that the predicted sleet and freezing rain for Monday has disappeared from the forecast. Thank goodness!

• I felt much better yesterday. Today, not so good. And so it goes with a cold, right? I just have to be patient (not my strong point.)

• We watched White Christmas  last night. I love that movie. It was the first of our list of holiday movies that will take us through Christmas Eve. That scene in the inn when Dean Jagger comes into the  room in his old uniform and we hear “Ten-hut!” and all of the soldiers start to sing “We’ll follow the old man, wherever he wants to go…” makes me cry every time I see it.

• In the mail yesterday:

Starbush Santa – the Vintage by Crystal creation that I snagged in her latest blog sale. As always, her work is exquisite. How she comes up with so many different creations every year, every holiday, I don’t know. But I am and will always be a huge fan of her work.

• And a screenshot from a Little Z video sent to us this week. He likes to tell us jokes and was just about to launch into one when I inadvertently took this shot (I’m glad I did.)

He’s so beautiful. And funny, and incredibly smart, and a pistol! We are in love with that boy.

• I’ve started reading The Seine; the River that Made Paris. I’ve been missing Paris lately so it seemed like the perfect time to read it.

Happy Saturday.

Putz-ing, Don & Little Z

December 6, 2019 at 9:58 am by Claudia

I found this vintage putz house last year, I believe. I really love it. I now have 3 of them, but I’m always on the search for more.

Oh, yours truly is very, very tired. I got through the day yesterday and, happily, they let me out earlier than I had expected, so I was able to get home in time for dinner.

Don’s excitement about Christmas is surprising this year. He wanted a real tree. He brought it up right after Thanksgiving. Instead of decorating it on my own as has been the case for the past few years, he helped string the lights and insisted on helping with the decorating. He picked me up at the bus station last night and when we walked in the door, I heard Christmas music playing on the radio. He had turned it on right before he left to get me. This morning while I write this post, he’s making breakfast and he just said “Can I turn on some Christmas music?”

Who is  this person?

Today, Little Z goes to visit Santa with my sister and brother-in-law. They make a big deal out of it, taking him to see Santa and then going out to dinner afterwards. How I wish we could be there! He still believes in Santa. Watching a child you love talk to Santa and witnessing the magic of Christmas as seen through his eyes is priceless. That boy is so dear. We’ll call him this weekend and ask him all about it.

Currently reading The Magpie Murders  by Anthony Horowitz. He is such an inventive writer. He regularly takes on the murder mystery and skews it just a little, resulting in a fresh take. If you haven’t read him, I recommend his books highly.

Okay, my friends. I have some things I have to do today – just a few. Mainly, I’m taking it easy today and on the weekend.

Happy Friday.

Flowers & Celebrations

June 25, 2019 at 10:18 am by Claudia

Some garden pictures, taken on Sunday:

We had a lovely low-key celebratory day yesterday. That’s what Don wanted and I was more than happy to comply.

I found a small cake for him from a local bakery – if I was eating sugar, I would have been thrilled because it was chocolate and buttercream and hazlenuts and all things yummy. It was the perfect size, not so big that you feel you have to eat it for days, not so small that it’s all gone in one bite. (I didn’t really even have a craving for it, which is a good sign, as I’ve been off sugar for 3 weeks now.)

I sang Happy Birthday and he blew out the candles and he loved his presents. He had asked for an inexpensive watch because he was sick of checking his phone to get the time of day. I found a rather stylish Timex that I thought he would like and it was a big success. He also was the recipient of two new books.

Don is such an interesting guy. He has a thirst for knowledge that I deeply admire. He never went to college. He’s self-educated and he’s whip smart. In the past year, he has been delving into several subjects – he calls them his ‘courses.’ The non-fiction books he reads are dense – far too dense for me. He reads a lot.

And, though he’s played guitar since he was 12 years old, he is studying online with a well-known guitar player. He practices every day for hours. All of the pieces are complicated and completely instrumental.

He’s so disciplined about his reading and his guitar study. I am not nearly so disciplined about anything!

We also had a FaceTime call with our Little Z, who is not so little anymore. He was having a great birthday, but was yawning because all that celebrating is tiring! He sent a video Happy Birthday message to his Uncle Don in the morning and we sang to him on the phone until he interrupted us to tell us all about his new iPad. I love hearing him talk about pretty much anything, including an iPad.

He’s still young enough that he gives us kisses on the phone. I hope that lasts a bit longer.

A lovely day. Two lovely guys.

I finished 84, Charing Cross Road  this morning. Absolutely charming. And now, on to The Diary of a Bookseller.

We’ve got thunderstorms headed our way this afternoon and the rest of the week will have temperatures in the high eighties. I guess it’s summer.

Thank you for all the lovely birthday greetings!

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
