A Tropical Today; a Nor’easter Tomorrow

Taking a break from the Today show while Megyn Kelly (not a fan) explores “non-monogamous relationships.” Spare me. Open marriages? I have a solution for you: Don’t get married. End of story.

But in the 8:00 hour, I saw this:

Do we really need the crawl running during this happy, uplifting number? Does it have to run all the time?

This is why I don’t watch this stuff in the morning. Makes me crazy.

They’ll be on again during the 10:00 hour when Megyn has finished her exploration of “People Who Cheat But Like To Call It By A Fancy Name That Makes It Sound Like It’s Cool And Hip.”

Don just called. They pre-taped the number for the 10:00 segment, so he got to go home. They’ve been up since 4 am. I didn’t get enough sleep last night, but I realize I have nothing to complain about. So I quickly zipped my lips during my phone conversation with Don. He’s got a rehearsal this afternoon and a show tonight. And he got up at 4. Nevertheless, he says the whole thing “was a blast.”

Meanwhile, it was 60 degrees yesterday and we’ve got a Nor’easter headed our way. The local forecast calls for a lot of rain but the models conflict as to whether we’ll also get pummeled with a lot of snow. One forecast says we could get from 4 – 8 inches. The other says it will be mostly rain, with some snow.

Don’t they know I need to know???

I am ready for spring. At least it’s now March, right? Of course, March in the Northeast can mean lots of snow.

Hopefully…not.

Except for snow, we had a bit of everything around here yesterday. The day started out with rain. Thunderstorms were predicted, but the sun came out for several hours and the weather forecast changed to no storms. Then in the late afternoon, the sky darkened and I checked the weather app. Oh. Severe thunderstorm watch. And we got a doozy. Thunder, lightning, torrential rain, and hail. Then the sun came out. And then, at about 10 pm, another thunderstorm.

From the day:

I recycled. I weed whacked. I pulled weeds. I ended up mowing the entire front lawn on a very humid day. We don’t live in an area where there are orderly plots of land with orderly grass that grows in an even, orderly way. Nope. We have different kinds of grass, weeds within the grass, buttercups in the grass, etc. So when it starts to get out of hand, it looks uneven and messy. So after all the rain, I was itching to mow the lawn. And I did.

After I took a break and showered, I went outside to take some pictures. I love a freshly mown lawn!

As I was taking these pictures, the sky started darkening and that’s when I realized we were under a severe thunderstorm watch – which became a warning.

Back in the house.

After the rain, birds were everywhere, looking for worms.

This female northern flicker was in the corral.

My lonesome dove had clearly been caught in the rain.

And spotted way, way off in the woods:

A baltimore oriole.

This morning, as I was waiting for my coffee, I saw a hummingbird and a bunny rabbit within inches of each other. Alas, no camera.

I’ve seen two young mourning doves resting on the porch railing on two different occasions. Newly fledged, I imagine. And after the storm yesterday, I saw four mourning doves together, looking for food. So I’m surmising that the two young doves are the progeny of the pair of doves that live on the property.

Now, if only my lonesome dove could find a mate. The pair chases him/her away. Breaks my heart.

Storms, Birds, Bunnies & The Next Project

I was outside watering all the plants yesterday when the sky turned dark with long, rolling rumbles of thunder. As I watched the storm roll in, I had such a strong memory of my childhood. Summer storms would come out of nowhere and we’d sit on our porch watching and waiting. As it began to rain, we’d play a little game with ourselves (my mom would do it, too.) The rain would start to hit the edge of the porch and we’d see how long we could remain sitting on those folding aluminum chairs as the rain crept in, closer and closer, before we started to get wet and had to run back in the house.

Such a lovely, carefree memory. I had that feeling yesterday. Of the magic and power of a summer thunderstorm and the games of childhood.

From yesterday afternoon, a finch in the birdbath. I use the telephoto lens on my older Canon. It works pretty well – it will do until I can get the lens I want for my current camera. I keep the older Canon on the kitchen table so I can grab it for moments like this one.

This guy tends to hang out in this little niche. Here, he’s cleaning himself.

He was dining while the finch was bathing. There’s lots of activity around here right now. I’m enjoying it immensely – there will come a time, later in the summer, when I won’t see as many birds and the community pool that is the birdbath will be woefully empty. That always makes me sad. So, for now, I’m trying to drink it all in.

7-19 prepping

I’m also sorting all the various pieces of my next project: The Fairfield dollhouse. I’m slowly getting ready to start in, as I read and research and gather supplies. Soon, I’ll just need to say, “What the heck – I’m going to jump in!”
