His Birthday

June 24, 2016 at 8:52 am by Claudia

3-12 framed

Is that Don Sparks? Actor, Musician, and all-around wonderful guy?

It is.

And it’s his birthday today.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t utter a fervent thank you for his presence in my life. Not one. My life was happy before I met him, but it is so much happier and richer and loving since. Oh, it’s overused, I know, but he is  my soul mate.

He’s kind, courageous, intelligent, wildly funny, good, compassionate, wise, and humble. He is always trying to be a better person. He reaches out to help those in need. He has an open and giving heart.

He’s a brilliant actor. He writes beautiful music with lyrics that will break your heart and make you laugh and touch a chord deep within you. He was a wonderful father to our beloved dogs. He cooks (lucky me). He has a sense of adventure and spontaneity that I so admire and that nicely balances my more cautious nature. He has made me a better person, that’s for sure.

I won’t talk about the day we met – that anniversary is coming up in a couple of weeks – but I will say that it was the game changer, the most important day of my life.

Don Sparks, you are simply a wonderful man, the best man I have ever known.

Happy Birthday, dear one.

And Happy Birthday to our nephew, Little Z! He’s five years old today!

We love that they share the same birthday. Uncle Don and Little Z.

I’ll be back tomorrow with Don’s reaction to the TSP.

Happy Friday.

Civil Disobedience, Flowers & A Dove

June 23, 2016 at 8:44 am by Claudia

In this house, more often than not, these words are spoken: “There’s nothing  on TV!”

Last night, however, we were glued to the television as House Democrats, led by one of the heroes of the Civil Rights movement, John Lewis, took over the House floor, staging a sit-in. Paul Ryan gaveled the session and ordered the cameras that C-Span uses shut off.

Ah, but this is the age of social media and tech-savvy Representatives used Facebook and Periscope to broadcast what was going on and C-Span tapped into it. It was real, it was raw and it was incredibly powerful.

I just checked. They’re still there and they’re still broadcasting.  They’ve been at it since 11:30 am yesterday morning. I tweeted my support to them last night and tweeted my disgust to Paul Ryan (more than once). It’s a simple request: a vote on two relatively mild measures, one to close a loophole in background checks and one to prohibit the selling of guns to anyone on the No-Fly List. I mean, really, what could possibly be problem here? It’s a no-brainer.

Watching this civil disobedience in action is inspiring. There are times I feel that no one in Washington DC is listening to us. These brave Representatives are. And John Lewis has more moral fiber in his little finger than Paul Ryan and all those who pander to the NRA combined.

They’re taking a stand.  #HoldTheFloor #NoBillNoBreak

See? I’m using hashtags.

Moving on.

The bee balm is just about to pop.

Pretty roses.

And just-about-to-open roses.

6-23 yarrow

Yarrow self-seeds and plants itself right in front of the chicken-wire-fence-garden, tall and strong and beautiful.

We are desperate for rain here. The rivers are low, the grass is getting brown, and we didn’t have much snow pack this winter. Everyone around here has a well that needs to be replenished.

It was supposed to rain today, but the forecast changed overnight. No rain. Maybe some on Monday. Fingers crossed.

Yesterday, I saw two mourning doves on the driveway. A pair. I wondered if my ‘lonesome dove’ had found a mate or if this was an already established pair. Later on in the day, I saw the dove on the edge of the birdbath:

6-23 lonesomedove

Such a gentle beauty.

Tomorrow is the big day. Will you stop by and leave a birthday wish for my sweetheart? I promise to shoot a little video of his reaction when he sees the Top Secret Project and I’ll probably share it with you on Saturday. I’m also putting together some photos of the whole project and I’ll write a separate post with all the sources and other pertinent information.

Happy Thursday.

Book Review: He Will Be My Ruin by K. A. Tucker

June 22, 2016 at 9:55 am by Claudia

Today I am reviewing He Will Be My Ruin  by K.A. Tucker for TLC Book Tours. As always, I am provided with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

About the book (from the publisher): On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight year old woman could want: a one bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence inconclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life – and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of the killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

My review: I wanted to really like this book, as I am an avid mystery fan. The title alone is wonderfully intriguing. And it’s not that I totally disliked He Will Be My Ruin, either. Since I don’t want to write the equivalent of a passive-aggressive review, let me be clearer.

The premise is interesting. A life-long friend who doesn’t believe that her friend committed suicide and is determined to find clues to what really happened. That is somewhat like the premise in the last book I reviewed, Keep You Close. All well and good.

But the characters and their back story leave a bit to be desired. Extremely rich family (Maggie’s) and  poor family retainers (Celine and her mother) who are considered part of the family. Maggie and Celine, rich girl and poor girl, grow up together and become friends. Maggie decides to stay away from the family business and use her wealth to run a charitable foundation and she spends lots of time in Africa doing really good things. Celine works hard in NYC to get the tuition necessary for further training, refusing to accept any help from Maggie or her family.

It’s the kind of thing I find to be a bit trite and lacking any depth. Tucker is a good writer as far as plot goes and there are a few twists and turns that are surprising. But it’s hard for this reader to get fully involved in a story that I couldn’t quite believe to begin with. The clichéd rich girl/poor girl story kept me from fully losing myself in the book. It was just too obvious.

That being said, if you like Chick Lit with a mystery, you might well enjoy this book. It’s a good beach read, it takes place in New York City (which is always a great character in itself) and there is an interesting mystery to solve.

About the author: K. A. Tucker is the author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and the Burying Water series. She currently resides outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.

I’m sorry to say there is no giveaway connected with this book tour.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
