Book Review: Keep You Close by Lucie Whitehouse

June 6, 2016 at 9:09 am by Claudia

Unknown

Today I am reviewing Keep You Close by Lucie Whitehouse for TLC Book Tours. As always, I am provided with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

About the book (from the publisher): When artist Marianne Glass falls to her death, everyone insists it was a tragic accident. Yet Rowan Winter, once her closest friend, suspects there is more to the story. Ever since she was young, Marianne had paralyzing vertigo. She would never have gone to the roof’s edge.

Marianne – and the whole Glass family – once meant everything to Rowan. For a teenage girl, motherless with a much-absent father, this lively, intellectual household represented a world of glamour and opportunity.

But since their estrangement, Rowan knows only what the papers reported about Marianne’s life: her swift ascent in the London art world, her much scrutinized romance with her gallerist. If she wants to discover the truth about her death, Rowan needs to know more. Was Marianne in distress? And so she begins to seek clues – in Marianne’s latest work, her closest relationships, and her new friendship with an iconoclastic fellow artist.

But the deeper Rowan goes, the more sinister everything seems. And a secret in the past only she knows makes her worry about her own fate…

My review: Author Lucie Whitehouse is new to this reader and what a pleasure it is to get to know her work. She writes beautifully and know how to craft a story that is complex and multi-layered, slowly building suspense until the reader simply can’t put the book down until the final page. This is a psychological thriller that gets the reader in its grip and doesn’t let go.

The story takes place in Oxford and London – mostly in Oxford – and the author clearly knows Oxford intimately. It’s painted with such detail, with descriptions that are so evocative, that the reader can’t help but feel they are walking the streets of the famous university town.

The characters are written with great depth, all of them richly drawn. One gets a real sense of who they are and of their complexity of their relationships to each other, to Rowan, and to the late Marianne – who, by the way, is also a ‘living’ character in this story as we learn about her life, her passions and her talent.

What impresses me about this book is the author’s sure-footed skill in writing a plot that is compelling, complicated, and mysterious. She slowly unveils clue after clue, revealing only what needs to be revealed at any given point, gradually adding layer after layer until – and this is what blew my mind – there is a plot twist that is unexpected and shocking. I literally gasped out loud.

I never recap the plot or reveal any telling details because that, my friends, would ruin the experience for you. I will say that this is one of the best books I’ve read in quite some time. It stayed with me long after the final page. Haunting, suspenseful, a character study that is beautifully written – I recommend it highly.

Alarms, Roses and a Beautiful Moth

June 5, 2016 at 10:14 am by Claudia

Curses! Foiled again.

As we were drifting off to sleep last night, one of our smoke detectors went off. But it was just a quick beep-beep. Don got up and disconnected the one he thought was making the sound. (We’ve had trouble before with moths and bugs flying in the detector and setting it off.)

We went back to bed, now wide awake. About ten minutes later, another beep-beep, beep-beep. So Don got up, as did I, and we took the cover off the detector that is right outside our bedroom door. We couldn’t smell any smoke. None of the detectors downstairs were going off.

Back to bed. Ten minutes later…you guessed it. So we got up and went to the detector that is over the stairs. It had to be this one. (There are three detectors rather close together. One is wired into our security system, the other two aren’t.) This one was wired into the system. Cover off. This time we went downstairs and checked everything out. Nothing. We got back into bed. Neither of us could sleep. I got up and checked out the office, just to make sure. Nothing. No more beeps. But sleep was a long time coming.

You understand why I say I really don’t feel like driving 2½ hours to the Miniature Show. In stormy weather, no less.

Someday, I guess. Someday I’ll get to one.

Late yesterday afternoon, I  saw something on the kitchen screen.

6-5 lunamoth4

I grabbed my camera, intercepted Don as he arrived home, and went to investigate.

6-5 lunamoth1

Oh my heavens! We gasped when we saw this moth. The wings look like leaves. It has a swallowtail. The top edge of the wings looks like a twig. And the antennae look like feathers.

6-5 lunamoth2

There’s a ruffled edge on the wings as well as ‘eyes.’ I ran inside to look it up and discovered it is a Luna Moth. I’ve heard of them, but sightings are rare, as they only fly at night. They live for one week, in which they mate, lay their eggs on the underside of a Black Walnut leaf, and die. We have several Black Walnut trees on the property.

We were entranced by this beautiful being. I’ve never seen one in person, only in photos.

6-5 lunamoth3

It’s one of the largest moths in North America.

Seeing it there felt like a blessing, an amazing sight that was witnessed by only Don and me. Sure enough, as soon as it was dark, it was gone.

Aren’t we lucky?

My Julia Child roses are blooming. I originally chose the bush because the flowers were yellow. Over the course of the years, they’ve turned dark red. That happens sometimes with roses that are grafted onto another bush. I miss the yellow, but I’ll take the red, especially since it didn’t bloom last summer after the harsh winter we had. I thought it was gone, remember? I was even considering digging it out and removing it. But it surprised me this year.

6-5 rose

Some of the leaves have been chomped on by some creature or other. But I won’t use pesticides, so that’s the way it’s going to be.

6-5 rose2

Pretty!

So we’ll try to figure out the mystery of the smoke detector today. Perhaps the battery needs replacing.

I have a book review scheduled for tomorrow. It’s for Keep You Close, an incredibly well-written mystery with a twist in the plot that will shock you. I’ll be giving away a copy, so be sure to stop by.

Happy Sunday.

A Late Day Walk Around the Gardens

June 4, 2016 at 9:59 am by Claudia

A slow start today as both Don and I had trouble getting to sleep last night. Who knows why? So I slept in a bit this morning. Yesterday was rainy, tomorrow will be stormy, but today should be lovely and dry.

I’m hoping I can get to the miniature show in Massachusetts tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

I took a little walk around the property yesterday.

6-4 wildroses

There are wild roses blooming everywhere. It’s very hard to keep these crazy, prickly plants in check, but at this moment in time, I’m grateful they are so abundant. The scent is heavenly.

6-4 wildgarden

The garden looks wild in the early summer. Everything is growing by leaps and bounds. The catmint is in full flower, the crown vetch is doing its best to take over the garden bed (I’ve already had to pull it back a couple of times.)

6-4 crownvetch

More lamium; this one is Dead Nettle. It’s in full bloom. It’s one of the first things I planted in the big garden bed ten years ago and it never fails to flower. Very, very dependable.

6-4 openingclematis1

I am fascinated by every step of a plant’s growth, by all the stages of a flower. Here’s a clematis flower bud starting to open.

6-4 openingclematis

A little further along.

The clematis has more blooms than ever. It’s simply gorgeous.

This morning, I looked out the window of the kitchen door and there was a Northern Flicker just landing on the pavement. At the same time, our little chipmunk was running under the fence and he stopped, did a double take, and quickly escaped via the planter. Don said it must look like Jurassic Park around here to that little chippie.

The Northern Flicker is new to our property. I had to look him up in my bird book because I couldn’t identify him. Northern Flickers are a type of woodpecker. He’s really beautiful. I’ll try to get a photo because he has lovely markings.

Finally, I rescued two peonies from the heavy downpour that happened yesterday morning.

6-4 peoniesinvase

“Still Life with Peonies.”

I’m inhaling that scent every chance I get.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
