More from the Wadsworth

February 5, 2016 at 9:56 am by Claudia

Ready for a picture heavy post? By popular request, I’m sharing more of the photos I took the other day at the Art Museum.

Here goes.

2-5 entrance gallery

This is the first gallery you see as you enter the museum. The lady in the foreground was a longtime employee of the museum and the artist Alex Katz made this in honor of her. It’s titled, “Margie.” There’s a photo of her standing next to the figure. (1971)

The figure in the background is made from rugs. “Sound suit” by Nick Cave (2009)

2-5 romaire beardon

In the same gallery, She-ba, by Romare Bearden (1970)

2-5 silhouettes

Silhouettes, cut from paper, by the artist Kara Walker. (2013)

2-5 dali

Salvador Dali – Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach (1938)

2-5 magritte

René Magritte – Les Intermittences du Coeur (The Fickleness of the Heart) (1950)

2-5 picasso

Pablo Picasso – The Artist (1963)

2-5 winslowhomer

Winslow Homer – Rocky Coast (Maine Coast) (1882-1900)

2-5 johnsingersargent

John Singer Sargent – Ruth Sears Bacon (I love this.) (1887)

2-5 matisse

Henri Matisse – The Ostrich Feather Hat (1918)

2-5 Monet beach

Claude Monet – The Beach at Trouville (1870)

2-5 Monetwaterlilies

Claude Monet – Nymphéas (Water Lilies) – (1907)

2-5 vangogh

Vincent Van Gogh – Self Portrait (1887)

2-5 Hals

Franz Hals – Portrait of Joseph Coymans (1644)

2-5 portraitgallery

One of the portrait galleries.

The museum has a vast collection of American Decorative Arts, where I encountered some of my favorite designers:

2-5 eames

Charles and Ray Eames

2-5 marcelbreuer

Marcel Breuer

2-5 franklloydwright

Frank Lloyd Wright

2-5 stickley

Gustav Stickley

It’s an amazing and wondrous museum and if I get over there again before my stay here ends, I’ll take more photos, okay?

In the meantime, I’m supposed to go home tomorrow and we’re getting at least 6 inches of heavy, wet snow today. Do you sense a pattern here? If I decide to make the trip home…it snows.

Cross your fingers for me!

Happy Friday.

At the Wadsworth

February 4, 2016 at 9:05 am by Claudia

After some wonderful conversation with Charlie over a latte, I headed over to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, which is the gorgeous art museum that is in downtown Hartford. I’ve been there before, but it’s been a few years.

I love this museum, not only for the great works of art that are housed there, but also for its size, which is large, but doable.

I took at least eighty pictures of Van Goghs, Monet, Manet, Hals, Picasso, Dali – you name it. But in the interest of time, I’ll share a few of my very favorites with you.

2-4 wadsworth

The entrance to the museum. It was a rainy day, perfect for spending some time inside.

2-4 warhol

Jackie Kennedy – Andy Warhol.

2-4 chagall

Autumn in the Village – Marc Chagall

2-4 lookup

The trapeze artist suspended from the ceiling.

2-4 hudson

Sunset on the Hudson – Sanford Robinson Gifford

2-4 maine

Coast Scene, Mount Desert (Sunrise off the Maine Coast) – Frederic Edwin Church

2-4 woodpecker

Picnic with Downy Woodpecker – Valerie Hegarty. I’ll share the description with you:

2-4 description

Amazing.

2-4 beautyqueen

Beauty Contest: To the Memory of P. T. Barnum – Florine Stettheimer (with Rudolph Valentino, Edward Steichen, Carl Sandburg, P.T. Barnum.)

2-4 klimt

And perhaps my favorite, Two Girls with Oleander – Gustav Klimt.

2-4 greathall

Stunning.

2-4 stainedglass

And more stunning.

It’s a gorgeous place. I even treated myself to lunch in the beautiful café. I kept thinking how much Don would love it here. Someday.

Happy Thursday.

Thoughts on Wednesday

February 3, 2016 at 9:26 am by Claudia

It’s February and that means my blogging anniversary is coming up. On February 17th, Mockingbird Hill Cottage (the blog, not the house) will be 8 years old. The house is 125 years old.

Blogging has changed a lot during the course of those eight years; some of it good, some of it not so good. Several bloggers have recently written posts about wanting to go back to the way they used to blog, before everything became about being bigger, better, and earning lots of income. None of that is at all bad, but along the way it’s easy to lose sight of what drew one to blogging in the first place.

Above all, what drew most of us to blogging was the desire to share our lives, our thoughts, and to connect with others (like-minded and not so like-minded.) That’s certainly what drew me to blogging – the opportunity to write, which has always been a passion of mine; and not only write, but create a visual journal by taking photographs that corresponded to the text.

Simple, right?

I’ve been posting daily for several years now. The discipline of writing every day is good for me. It anchors my mornings. I’m very proud of what I’ve created and I’m very proud of the fact that every post on this blog – and there have been 2,337 of them as of today – has been written by me. That means original content (for better or worse!) with no photos grabbed from other sites, no posts that originated elsewhere that I tweak for the blog, no guest posts (which I routinely decline.) There’s the rare sponsored post, and they are truly rare, but again; honestly and candidly written by me. It isn’t always easy to find something to write about on a daily basis, but I’ve stuck to my vision and I’m proud of that.

I guess I never had to ‘find’ what kind of blogger I was because I always intended to write about our life in the country in our little cottage. I’m comfortable with that. Luckily, when I first started, the blogging world was still a relatively small place. Now, it’s much, much bigger.

I often think about that. It must be hard to find a interesting and unique blog name nowadays. I don’t envy having to come up with something new.

Anyway, more thoughts on that coming up on February 17th.

I wanted to tell you about an item that I ordered and which just arrived yesterday. It’s from the shop, Lucy Jane. I read about it via another book blogger and promptly bookmarked the site, though I didn’t get around to ordering it until a couple of weeks ago.

It’s the Arrow Pencil Pouch, which comes in red, navy or black. It’s made of vinyl and is beautifully lined and the reason I bought it is because it is the perfect size for a Kindle Paperwhite. I tend to throw my Kindle in my bag when I’m on the road or traveling to NYC, and I was looking for something to protect it.

See, I’m slipping it in the pouch….

And there it is, safely nestled inside.

I really love it. I chose this bright red because I liked it and I thought it would be easier to find in the depths of my tote bag.

You could probably do the same thing with a cosmetics bag, and I have, but this is sturdy and has some heft. And it’s cute.

I’ve no affiliation with this company – just wanted to share it with you.

I just finished this scarf, it’s a special order.

2-3 scarf

It’s made from a yarn I got at my local yarn store – Malabrigo Pure Merino Superwash Rios in English Rose. Isn’t it beautiful?

Okay. I have to go take a shower and meet my friend Charlie for coffee.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
