Egg Cups

April 9, 2009 at 6:19 pm by Claudia

I have a collection of vintage egg cups that I love. They are mostly figural, decorated with little bunnies, ducks, and chicks. I never buy anything new; they have to be vintage and many of them were won on Ebay. I thought I’d share a few with you, because isn’t Easter the best time for egg cups? My impulse to collect these started with one single egg cup given to me by my dear godparents when I was a little girl. Sadly, one of my godparents, Nick, died this past year. This little cup was manufactured for Fannie Farmer as an Easter treat.

I hung onto this egg cup for years (I won’t say how many) until I read an article on collecting egg cups and realized that I could find more of these little gems. I bid on this rooster and chick egg cup in the middle of the night – I was determined to get it.

This little rabbit is holding up the egg – it looks heavy.

Mother and baby.

It takes two rabbits to hold this egg up!

These sweeties are playing on a teeter-totter!

This is one of my favorites – I love the Painter Bunny with his easel and decorated egg.

There is a playful quality about these egg cups that I just adore.

There are many more, but these are the most appropriate for Easter. Speaking of Easter Eggs, I was at it again:

I promise, that’s it with the fabric eggs – at least for this year.

A Cautionary Tale

April 8, 2009 at 2:33 pm by Claudia

In an earlier post, I mentioned that my husband assured me that there were buds on my recently planted lilac bush. I didn’t mention that I had asked him to not only look for signs of spring, but to photograph them and send them to me. He did. Imagine my surprise when I noticed in one of the shots that our Christmas wreath was still on the door. You remember that I left for California on January 2, having put all signs of Christmas away. Except for one. In my crazed preparations to leave, I missed the wreath. Don apparently didn’t ‘see’ that it was still there the entire time I was gone, even though he goes in and out of that door repeatedly. I immediately emailed him with an urgent request to ‘take it down!’

Fast forward a few days: Having not yet taken the wreath down despite my urgent request, Don opens the front door and a bird flies in the house. The bird panics and takes cover behind our umbrella stand. After a few moments, the bird flies back out. Don is amazed and shocked. We’ve never had a bird fly in the house before.

Shorty thereafter, Don remembers about the wreath and goes to take it down. There, on the backside of the wreath, he sees that birds have begun building a nest. Right between the wreath and our door. Of course, given how often we go in and out the front door, sometimes with the dogs, there is no way that nest and any eggs would have made it.

Lesson learned: Take your Christmas wreath down right after the New Year. Oh, and don’t leave it up to your husband.

Oh, I saved the sweet beginnings of the birds’ nest – its tucked safely in one of my McCoy planters.

At Home

April 6, 2009 at 12:57 pm by Claudia

Yes, friends, I am home at the cottage for a visit and it is heaven! After a brief time readjusting to a different time zone, I have settled in. I must say it is a bit strange to come home to my house, the place I am used to cleaning, spiffing and having control over, and finding it has been under my husband’s control. Do you know what I mean? Of course, I know he has been taking care of everything in my absence, but when I came in the door on Saturday night I saw that it was really true. I felt I had to get to know my house all over again. I don’t know if that makes sense – it is an emotional reaction to being away from my nest. And to a control person like me, knowing someone else has been in control is unsettling. My husband has done a splendid job and I’m proud of him. But I will be glad when I am back in my nest for good (and am in control again!)

Two lovely boxes were awaiting me when I arrived. The first was from Betzie and held the pink glass salt and pepper shakers I won in her giveaway. Aren’t they pretty? She also included some of her handmade soaps in a pretty pink bag! Thank you Betzie!

The second box contained two pincushions I ordered from Betty (one of our fellow Pink Saturday bloggers, as is Betzie.) I love these! Betty creates such fun, whimsical pincushions and I just had to have one. Make that two. Thank you Betty!

I also came home to these two:

It is so wonderful to be with my babies again. We’ve been having a wonderful time together. Don says that Riley (our quiet one) is like a different dog now that I’m home. He’s much livelier. I think they both feel our absences deeply and are happiest when the ‘pack’ is intact right here in Mockingbird Hill Cottage. By the way, when I pulled out my camera, Scout immediately sat and posed. That girl loves the camera!

I want to start cleaning out the garden but it is raining. That is not fitting in with my plan. Ah well. Husband made pancakes this morning, the dogs are lying beside me as I blog, I can hear the rain on the roof. All is well.

More later.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
