Checking in on the Mini Studio

February 10, 2023 at 9:11 am by Claudia

It all started with wanting to move the antique table that is in the living room over to the left, so I could move my monstera plant under the window. It needs more light than it’s been getting. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, but I guess I was fixed on centering that table under the window. That lead to me moving it to the corner, Don holding on to the monstera so it didn’t tip over, and lots of wrangling of plants and furniture. (This also led to a clean out the following moring of that corner, which is right next to Don’s chair. The domino effect.) In the course of moving the table, one of the mini Adirondack chairs fell on the floor and broke apart. Adding that little mishap to the fact that I really needed to clean the interior of that dollhouse led to me carrying it over to the kitchen island yesterday, where I worked on it for a few hours.

Moving it to the corner is going to keep it out of direct sunlight, which is a good thing. And it’s now closer to Don, which he likes.

I glued the various parts of the chair back together, dusted, cleaned, re-glued some pieces that I made for the mini studio and gave it some love. As I started in on all of this, Don disappeared upstairs. When he came back down, he handed me a piece of copier paper with a photo of the late, great John Prine and asked if I could hang it on the wall. He managed to reduce it to the right scale, as well. He’s so darned adorable.

So here’s a little tour, since we haven’t done that for a long time.

The exterior of the studio. Sorry it’s on the kitchen island but it was raining yesterday and I couldn’t take it outside. The chair on the right is the one I had to repair. I built this studio from a kit, by the way.

Another view. I made all the board and batten siding.

Inside. I made the fireplace in the corner, truly one of my happiest mini achievements.

I built the kitchenette counter and the desk/tables. I miniaturized Shanna’s sketch of Scout, made a frame, and hung it on the wall. Scout had just passed away, my dad left us a few months before that, and I was so heartbroken that I had a hard time motivating myself to finish this for Don’s June birthday, but I did. I knew Don would love to see Scoutie featured.

I figured mini-Don would need a little area where he could make coffee and have a snack. There is a back story on every one of these items, and you can find that under Dollhouse/Miniatures on the navigation bar.

There’s John, just above the sketch of Scout. I mounted the photo on cardboard. I’m not totally happy with it and was thinking of redoing it, but Don is thrilled with it, and that’s all that matters.

Rest in Peace, Scout and John.

And Rest in Peace to Burt Bacharach. I loved everything he wrote, starting with my first encounter with Walk On By  when I was a kid. I couldn’t get it out of my head. Thus began my love of songs written in a minor key. Haunting, beautiful; it drew me in and I became a fan.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Sunrise & A Chapter a Day

February 9, 2023 at 8:50 am by Claudia

Sunrise, this morning. The sun comes up over the back forty, so we have this consistently lovely view of the intense colors without the interference of tall buildings or houses.

We’re due for some rain today. But it was sunny for much of the day yesterday so I guess I can give up some sunshine for some water.

I read two chapters of War and Peace  this morning because I didn’t read yesterday’s chapter. Now I’m caught up. If you’re interested in reading one of the classics and it’s large and weighty – for instance, Crime and Punishment, or Anna Karenina, or Les Miserables –  and you’re put off by the sheer size of the book, I cannot recommend this ‘chapter a day’ method enough. There are also readalongs for Les Miserables and Anna Karenina  going on in the Book/Instagram community. I’m also reading my main book at the same time, but I don’t consider this ‘reading two books at once.’ Really, a chapter a day is hardly trying to handle two books at the same time. It’s easy. It took me about 10 minutes to read those two chapters this morning. And I was done for the day. It’s fun to do this with a community of other readers, but you could easily do it on your own. I wish I’d thought of this possibility a long time ago. I’m a one-book-at-a-time reader, so, if I had picked this book to read in the past, I would have felt committed to it for the duration. This way, I can keep reading as I normally do, and just carve out a few minutes a day to read War and Peace. Not really genius, but close to it! I’m proud to say that Don is keeping up with his daily read of W & P as well, and, at times, he’s ahead of me! And Don doesn’t usually read novels.

I’m halfway through the newest Louise Penny and fully in its grip. I read a chunk of it yesterday afternoon.

I have lots of little things to do today and I also feel the need to dress a doll or two. I’ve been rather lazy about that lately.

I keep thinking it’s Friday, but it’s Thursday. Yesterday, I thought it was the weekend. The life of the semi-retired. Or: the life of the freelancer. Same thing.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Harper Day

February 8, 2023 at 9:07 am by Claudia

My girls always cheer me up, so I took some photos of Harper yesterday.

A Valentines Day theme.

A little closer. Look at the beautiful details: the subtle purple around the inner corner of the eyes, the beautifully drawn eyebrows, slight pinkness on the end of the nose and on the eyebrows, and my favorite – the little veins in the cheeks.

Harper was customized by Ferro Doll and to me, there is no one better. While I’d love to collect lots more Blythes, the reality is that I can’t. But one more Ferro? Absolutely, if I can get the style I want. Elena does a version of the doll with a head of curls and intense eyes/eyebrows. That’s the kind of girl I want. But she doesn’t take requests or commissions. I’ve let her know my interest but that’s all I can do.

And just to give you idea of her size against the real size of our home:

Yesterday was Harper Day.

Nothing else to report. I’m deep cleaning the bathroom in preparation for re-caulking the tub, but today I’m wrestling with a stye in my left eye, so I’m taking it easy. I remember that I had a stye on the very last day of filming on Spoiler Alert, too.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
