Creative Messes & A Quick Trip to IKEA

August 13, 2016 at 9:36 am by Claudia

Lest you think everything is in order around here – or that every photo I take is styled.

Yes, this is what it looks like up here in the office/studio. It’s a mess. A creative mess, but a mess nonetheless.

We went to IKEA yesterday. It takes an hour and a half to get there – it’s in New Jersey – so we rewarded ourselves with lunch while we were there. The new catalogue is out and I grabbed a copy as soon as we entered the building.

There were a couple of things I wanted to get. For Little Z:

This dollhouse, which can stand alone or hang on a wall. It’s the Flisat Doll House. I saw it on my friend Kat’s Instagram feed and since every time we Face Time with Little Z, he wants to see my dollhouse, I thought this might be fun for him. I’m not quite sure what to do with it yet. Do I decorate it à la Paw Patrol? Or is that too limiting? Do I gather up some basic furniture that is appropriate for a five year old boy, so he can play with it? Not sure yet, but I don’t mind saying I wouldn’t mind hanging this on my  wall! But, as you well know, the available wall space around here has already been taken.

Besides some new fry pans (which we desperately needed) and some new drinking glasses, I also spotted this little piece and decided it would be perfect for storing minis:

That’s what is in the box that’s leaning against the wall in the second photo. Now, unfortunately, I have to put it together, which will result, I’m absolutely sure, in lots of cursing.

The dollhouse is in the big blue IKEA bag. I have about 8 of these bags now, because I always forget to take the bags I already own with me when I visit IKEA and end up having to buy new ones. Since they are handy for so many things, among them, moving my crap into temporary housing when I’m in Hartford, I don’t mind having more.

There is an Excessive Heat Warning today with the heat index headed to well over 100°. I will water. I will walk down to the mailbox to get the mail. That’s it. I’m hiding indoors for the rest of the day, putting together fiddly pieces from IKEA, and…maybe…straightening things up around here.

I framed the watercolor of Scout:

It’s so beautiful. Now, we just have to figure out the best place to hang it. There has been much discussion, but we haven’t come up with a decision yet. To be continued.

Happy Saturday.

Parrish The Thought

July 1, 2016 at 9:22 am by Claudia

When I took the sketch of Scout to Michael’s a couple of weeks ago in order to find the right frame, I decided to also take the Maxfield Parrish that arrived at our cottage with all of the glass broken. It had been sitting in a corner of my office, covered in protective fabric, until I could get around to dealing with it. I knew it needed new glass, but when I measured it, I quickly discovered it was an odd size. It had been framed many, many years ago – most likely in the 1920s – and the backing was fragile.

So, off I went. The woman working in the frame department was so helpful; she carefully removed all the nails, and gently removed the print. Thank goodness, I didn’t just opt for a piece of glass. The corrugated cardboard used as backing had left its mark on the back of the print, so we caught it just in time. After discussing many options, I decided to stay with the original frame and spacers were added, as well as new glass and acid-free backing. The logo from the original framer in New Orleans was carefully cut out and tucked in a little envelope on the back.

Instead of getting an estimate, I ended up going ahead with the order, and yesterday, it was ready.

It won’t look all that different to you, but I know it’s been given the correct acid-free backing and that spacers are between the print and the glass, and that it looks more beautiful than ever!

Of course, all this cost me nearly as much as the print, thank you very much. On the other hand, if I had left it as is, the print would have soon been damaged, so I’m choosing to think of it as an unexpected blessing.

When we first purchased it, I told Don I pictured it hanging on the wall near my desk, in my soon-to-be office space. And there it is.

I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to look over to my right and see Dinky Bird by Maxfield Parrish hanging on the wall.

The machine embroidery of Scout was also ‘framed’ yesterday and looks much better than it does in this picture. I stretched it on a small canvas and it’s now leaning against the wall on the left side of my desk.

In case you think my desk is always neat, here is what I shoved to the side to take the picture of the Parrish.

Then, of course, I was on a roll, so I decided to finally do something about the bulletin board and mini pottery, etc., that are hanging on the wall between the china cabinet and the corner. They were much too close together because I added the bulletin board a few weeks after I hung ‘Claudia’ and the mini pottery.

I’m inventing a new word: Spanging. Definition: when, in the midst of hanging something on the wall, many mistakes are made with the unhappy byproduct being unnecessary holes in the wall, resulting in the person who is hanging the object simultaneously spackling the holes and rehanging the object.

That’s what I did yesterday. I had the same trouble when I originally hung everything. It’s because all three objects are hanging in a corner and the desk is in the way and I’m working under a slanted ceiling, so my body is torqued and I just can’t get things even.

7-1 corner

It’s dark in this corner this morning, but you get the picture. And of course, I took the picture at an angle for the same reasons given above. But trust me, everything is level and there’s much more space between the bulletin board and Claudia and the mini pottery. It needed breathing space.

Sigh. Here’s my view out the window as I’m sitting at my desk.

I’m shooting directly into the light, of course, so it’s a bit blurry, but there’s the mountain ridge. The trees have obligingly provided an opening so I can see the mountains. Thank you!

Happy Friday.

And Just Like That…

May 25, 2016 at 9:09 am by Claudia

And just like that, summer is here. Today the temp is going to reach 89° and the next two or three days will reach 90°. Plus, we’re headed into about a week or so of rain and thunderstorms, starting on Friday.

Not quite ready for summer.

5-25 galvanizedtub

We went to our local nursery yesterday to buy our hanging plants for the porch. I also bought some  geraniums for the whiskey barrels and the lantanas, sweet potato vine, and dracaena for the galvanized tub that sits on the Funky Patio.

Having gardened here since 2005, the perennial gardens are now well established and I don’t have to spend money adding plants every year (this is why I love perennial gardening.) The modest amount of money I spend is on a couple flats of impatiens for the pots (that I recycle every year) on the porch, some plants for the galvanized tub and the whiskey barrels, and a couple of hanging plants (scaevola) for the porch. I overwintered the hanging geranium from last summer, so I saved money there. I don’t change out my hanging pots during the summer – I buy plants that I know will last through the season. The scaevola is gorgeous and it lasts until the first frost, as do the impatiens, which I often overwinter.

5-25 hangingplant

Getting the scaevolas from the nursery always seems to mark the beginning of porch sitting for me. They look so beautiful hanging on the porch.

Don: Stop Here.

In TSP news, a guitar that I ordered arrived in the mailbox yesterday.

5-25 miniguitars

It’s the one on the right. The guitar on the left was given to me by Barbara. I liked it so much that I was determined to order another version by the same Etsy seller, LA LittleArtist, who lives in The Netherlands.

They are beautifully made.

5-25 miniguitar

These look so much more realistic than any I’ve seen available commercially. And if I’m shooting for realism in the TSP, then there must be at least 3 guitars hanging around. After all, Don has about 4 or 5 of them upstairs in our office.

5-25 chairinoffice

We just moved this chair up to the office. We had to do some chair maneuvering when we bought the vintage chair on Sunday. At some point, we’d like an easy chair in this space, but for now, this will do. It’s actually remarkably comfortable. (The painting is an oil done by my father.)

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
