A Visitor and More Easter Egg Cuppery

A guy I know who is temporarily living in NYC came home for 24 hours. Just what the doctor ordered! He’s here now, but I’ll soon be taking him to the bus station for the trip back to the city. We’ve had a lovely time.

But then, he’s a lovely guy.

By the way, if you want to see a ‘feel-good’ movie, watch Wonder, starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and Jacob Tremblay. Cried my eyes out in the best possible way.

Today, we look at the egg cups that are on the mantel that is right above my desk. These are all figurals and they make me smile every single day.

The bunny on the left is named Scout – she reminds me of Scoutie: the facial expression. the eyes and the big pink ears. Bunnies frolicking, chicks on a seesaw, and a dog – so much lovely detail.

Love the little girl in a bunny costume and the bunnies holding up the egg cup. There’s my childhood egg cup and a bunny standing outside his egg cup house.

Here we have hens and chicks and a scottie dog and two dogs holding up an eye cup and bunnies and a pig.

And, of course, there’s the Lamb with the Party Hat and lovely thimble with a cow on top sent to me by a blogging friend, Susi, who lives in Amsterdam.

A couple of the egg cups are here as the result of successful bidding wars in the middle of the night. I was younger then.

You know, of course, that looking at all these egg cups makes me want to hop on over to eBay and see what’s out there.

Happens every year. Like clockwork.

It’s That Time Again

Easter is less than a week away and I am aware that I haven’t done any egg cup posts. The truth is, I don’t have a whole lot of energy for taking that on, but I will highlight them in groups. For those of you who are newer readers of the blog, I collect egg cups. I have a rather large collection now, my favorites being figural egg cups – the kind with little bunnies and chicks and dogs and pigs. While I’m sure some of the figurals were used, I suspect they were meant as gifts to display.

Though, now that I think of it, I distinctly remember using this egg cup, given to me as a child by my godparents:

This was one of a series of egg cups that were made for Fanny Farmer. They came as a gift, with candy inside the cup. I held onto this cup for years and years (let’s face it: and years) until one day I read an article in Martha Stewart Living about collecting egg cups. The lead photo in the article showed several egg cups and one of them was exactly like mine!

Bingo. I’m a collector at heart and after reading the article, I was hooked. eBay hadn’t been in existence all that long but it was a treasure trove of figural egg cups. I found myself in more than one middle-of-the-night bidding war. The good figurals are much harder to find nowadays.

Side note: After we moved east in 2001, and I had some spare time on my hands, I discovered two of my favorite things to collect: egg cups and McCoy Pottery. I blame Martha Stewart for both. And my neighbor, who had a great collection of McCoy that I lusted after.

Anyway.

The shelves in the first photo contain some traditional egg cups, a few transferware egg cups – one of them very old ironstone, egg cups from Prague, which Don brought back home after filming there, figural egg cups, including two ‘Walking Ware’ egg cups (the ones with shoes), and another Fanny Farmer egg cup, the one on the left on the second shelf. That egg cup is quite heavy and was made for Fanny Farmer by…wait for it…McCoy Pottery. The words “Fanny Farmer” are on the side of the egg cup.

When I first began collecting, I found that shelf you see in the first picture and it contained all my egg cups. Now, they are scattered all over the house. On the mantel right above my desk, on the bookshelves in the den, in various china cabinets and on a little hanging shelf in the den. I’ll share them with you in groups, and I won’t go into too much detail, unless you want me to.

There are many times I wish I had more space here and one of the reasons is that I have a secret desire to find one big piece that would hold all my egg cups. Wouldn’t that be neat?

Out of the Blue

We had an out-of-the-blue snow shower this morning, the kind where big, fat snow flakes are swirling around in the air, settling on the ground and on surfaces, only to disappear a short time later. Rather magical.

So I pulled on my coat and boots and took a picture or two.

Now the sun is trying to make an appearance. We’re not quite there yet. Update: It just emerged!

Warmer temperatures are on the docket for the week ahead. Not unseasonably warm, just what they should be at this time of year. Now we enter that in-between time here in the Northeast. It’s no longer winter, but it’s not warm enough to do anything in the garden. I do have some cleanup to do from the fallen tree limb, but I want to be completely done with this cold before I attempt that. I’m looking forward to it, though! Just getting out there and doing something (other than shoveling snow) will be lovely.

I promised you a picture of the bunny pillow and promptly forgot about it until this morning. Here it is. I love this design, which looks like it’s been carved out of a wood block and stamped on the fabric. I haven’t seen any of my bunnies yet, but when they appear, I’ll be a happy camper.

As long as they stay out of my garden.
